Drive off-road through rural Puerto Plata before cooling off in one of the country’s best-known waterfall systems. This half-day experience combines countryside buggy riding with guided access to the Damajagua waterfalls. Expect mud, river crossings and limestone slides — followed by a traditional Dominican lunch.
Your day begins with a safety briefing before heading out on an off-road buggy route through the countryside. You’ll drive along dirt tracks, through rural areas and past sugar cane fields, experiencing a different side of Puerto Plata beyond the resorts. Expect muddy sections and uneven terrain, especially after rain.
After the buggy section, you’ll transfer to the Damajagua reserve. Equipped with a helmet and life jacket, you’ll hike through tropical forest before reaching the waterfalls. From there, the descent includes natural limestone slides and optional jumps into freshwater pools. Guides supervise each section and explain the safest route through the canyon. Steps are available in certain areas if you prefer not to jump.
The morning finishes with a Dominican-style lunch featuring local staples such as rice, beans, chicken and fried plantains. It’s a well-balanced mix of driving, hiking and water-based activity in one compact half-day itinerary.
This experience takes place in and around Puerto Plata on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The buggy portion explores rural roads and countryside terrain outside the city centre, offering a look at local villages and agricultural land.
The waterfall section is located at the 27 Charcos de Damajagua reserve, approximately 30–40 minutes from central Puerto Plata. The protected area is known for its limestone rock formations, freshwater pools and forest setting.
Participants must be at least 13 years old and comfortable with moderate physical activity. The buggy route involves off-road driving conditions, and the waterfall section requires walking on uneven surfaces.
This activity is not recommended for people with back problems, heart conditions or for pregnant travellers. You should be confident in water and prepared for muddy conditions during the buggy ride.
With roots in Puerto Plata and years of experience in guiding and travel operations, this experience is carefully structured to balance adventure with organisation. Every detail — from timing between locations to lunch coordination — is handled to keep the day running smoothly.
Being locally raised means understanding the landscape and community beyond the tourist zones. The aim is to give visitors access to both the natural environment and the everyday rhythm of the region, delivered with reliable service and clear communication throughout.
No prior off-road driving experience is required. You will receive a safety briefing and driving instructions before setting off, and guides lead the route throughout the countryside section.
The terrain includes dirt tracks and uneven surfaces, so you should feel comfortable driving in basic off-road conditions. If you are unsure, you can ask the guide for clarification before departure.
Yes, especially if conditions are damp. The route passes through rural tracks and can include puddles, mud and dust depending on recent weather.
Wear clothing you do not mind getting dirty and bring a change of clothes if needed. Closed footwear is strongly recommended for driving comfort and safety.
The waterfall portion requires a short jungle hike on uneven terrain followed by movement through natural rock formations. You will climb, slide and optionally jump into freshwater pools.
A moderate level of fitness is required. You should be comfortable in water and able to walk uphill for a short period.
No. While jumping into the pools is an option, it is not mandatory. In several sections, there are alternative ways to enter the water.
Guides explain each section clearly so you can decide what feels comfortable before proceeding.
Wear swimwear underneath comfortable clothing suitable for driving. Quick-dry fabrics work well. Closed shoes with grip are important for both the buggy and waterfall sections.
Bring a towel and a change of clothes for after the activity. Water shoes are highly recommended for the canyon section but are not included.
A traditional Dominican lunch is included, typically consisting of rice, beans, chicken and plantains.
If you have specific dietary requirements, it is advisable to notify in advance where possible so arrangements can be considered.
The minimum age is 13 years. Teenagers should be confident in water and comfortable with moderate physical activity.
Parents should assess whether their child is confident with off-road driving conditions and natural terrain before booking.
This activity is not recommended for people with back problems, heart conditions or for pregnant travellers. The buggy route involves vibration and uneven surfaces.
The waterfall section includes impact from slides and potential jumps. Participants should be in generally good health.
Buggy tours operate in most weather conditions, including light rain, which may increase muddy sections of the route.
However, waterfall access may be adjusted if water levels are considered unsafe. In such cases, alternative arrangements or rescheduling options will be provided.
