This service provides expert help in designing and planning overnight expeditions for individuals or groups. Support includes route planning, booking campsites if required, and managing logistics such as meeting the group at key points, transporting equipment, and coordinating supplies, while clients provide their own food and water.
The process begins with a detailed discussion to understand your expedition goals, including any award requirements such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award. You will receive personalised assistance in selecting routes that fit your timeframe and ability, alongside advice on distances, timings, and identifying suitable rest and resupply points. This ensures your expedition plan is realistic and well organised.
Alongside route planning, support covers campsite booking if needed, and practical advice on equipment selection and packing to ensure safety and efficiency. Guidance on navigation, hazard awareness, and weather preparedness is also provided, tailored to the overnight challenges you expect to face. Logistics support includes coordinating meeting points, transporting gear, and helping to keep your expedition running smoothly from start to finish.
Sessions are based mainly in Dartmoor but can be arranged in Exmoor, Bodmin Moor, or other locations depending on your expedition plans. These areas offer varied terrain for practical planning and advice. Meeting points will be chosen for convenience and accessibility to suit your group.
If your expedition takes place further afield, support can be provided in other parts of the Southwest or beyond, adapting to your specific location and needs.
No prior expedition experience is necessary. This service suits groups or individuals at any stage of preparation, whether just starting to plan or ready for final checks. Participants should come prepared to discuss their aims and share any current plans or route ideas.
A reasonable level of fitness is beneficial but not essential since the focus is on planning and logistics rather than physical training. Any specific concerns or requirements can be addressed throughout the support.
The service is built on strong local knowledge and practical experience in Dartmoor and surrounding areas. The guidance is clear and straightforward, aimed at increasing confidence and ensuring expeditions are both safe and achievable.
The approach is friendly and supportive, focusing on your individual needs. Whether preparing for an award or organising a first overnight trip, this service provides the detailed planning and logistical support needed to help your expedition run smoothly.
This session is suitable for anyone planning an overnight expedition, whether a complete beginner or someone with previous experience looking for extra guidance. It is especially helpful for those preparing for the Duke of Edinburgh Award, groups, or individuals seeking tailored support to make their trip safer and more enjoyable.
The advice is adapted to suit all ages and abilities, and the instructor works closely with each participant or group to address specific goals and challenges, ensuring relevant and practical recommendations.
The session length is flexible and tailored to your needs. Many clients choose a full day (around 6 hours) to cover all aspects thoroughly, but shorter sessions can be arranged if you only need advice on certain elements such as route planning or equipment.
You can also book multiple sessions if your expedition preparation requires ongoing support. The cost is based on a day rate, and arrangements can be made to suit your schedule and requirements.
Yes, the session works well for both individuals and groups of up to 15 people. Group bookings are common, particularly for DofE participants preparing together or for school and youth groups requiring collective planning support.
The instructor ensures that advice and support are relevant to everyone’s needs, offering practical tips that apply to the whole group as well as individual concerns.
Support is available for a wide range of overnight expeditions, including wild camping trips, multi-day hikes, and award expeditions such as Duke of Edinburgh. The session focuses on planning, safety, and preparation rather than physical training or guiding during the expedition itself.
The advice is adaptable for different terrains and conditions, with a focus on making sure your expedition plans are safe, realistic, and enjoyable.
It’s helpful to bring any existing plans, maps, or route details you have so the instructor can provide specific advice. If you have equipment or kit you’re planning to use, bringing it along allows for tailored packing and preparation guidance.
Otherwise, come prepared to discuss your expedition goals and ask any questions. The session is very hands-on and interactive, designed to meet your individual needs.
Navigation advice is a key part of the session. You’ll learn how to select and use maps, plan routes safely, and understand compass use relevant to your expedition. The level of support can be adjusted depending on your existing skills and confidence.
Practical tips on dealing with low visibility, route-finding at night, and safety considerations are also included to help you navigate effectively during your overnight trip.
George is outstanding. I completed my NNAS Bronze over a beautiful two days on Dartmoor. George took the time to understand my reasons for wanting to complete it, was friendly, personable and so knowledgeable of all things navigation and Dartmoor. I couldn't have had a better guide, instructor and assessor.…
Me and my grandson thoroughly enjoyed our two days on Dartmoor with George. His knowledge of Dartmoor and navigation is excellent. He was both demanding and considerate at the same time. We both ended the course feeling that we had achieved a lot, and enjoyed ourselves doing it.
We had a great couple of days on Dartmoor and learnt so much. Would highly recommend the course.
