Take your map and compass work beyond marked paths into rougher tracks and open mountain terrain around Capel Curig and the Ogwen Valley. This intermediate course refreshes core skills and builds the tools you need when visibility drops and path cues disappear.
You meet in Capel Curig, check kit, and head outdoors fast. Day one refreshes foundations then pushes into micro-nav, timing estimates, and decision points away from obvious paths.
Day two consolidates poor-visibility strategies, multi-leg planning, and route cards on more complex ground. Your instructor coaches rather than simply leading, so you practise keeping position when the map picture is subtle.
By the end you should feel more confident planning and following journeys on rough tracks and open terrain, with clearer habits for recovering when weather or features confuse the picture.
Sessions start from Capel Curig and use the Ogwen Valley and surrounding Snowdonia hills. These venues offer contour complexity, open slopes, and enough feature variety to teach micro-nav without needing a remote expedition.
North Wales weather often supplies honest poor-visibility practice, which is exactly when intermediate skills matter most.
You should already have basic map and compass skills and be able to plan and follow marked-path journeys while tracking position. A novice course or equivalent practice is the usual entry point.
Bring fitness for two instructional mountain days on rough ground, plus willingness to make decisions and learn from mistakes under coaching.
Instruction comes from qualified mountain professionals with deep experience coaching navigation at higher levels, including remote-environment work. Ratios stay at a maximum of 6 to 1 so feedback stays personal.
Teaching is practical and grounded in Snowdonia terrain, with clear kit guidance so you arrive ready for open-ground practice in changeable weather.
Meet in Capel Curig for introductions and a quick skills audit, then move outdoors to refresh contours, pacing, and compass travel before shifting into micro-nav on smaller features.
The afternoon builds timing estimates and aiming-off practice on ground that asks more of your map reading than a simple path junction.
Return for a second day focused on poor-visibility strategies, multi-leg route planning, catching features, and route cards. You practise keeping position when path cues fade and weather closes in.
Expect more independent decision points, with coaching at key moments rather than continuous leading.
Finish with a structured debrief covering strengths, traps, and a practice plan for future hill days. You leave knowing which intermediate skills to repeat on your next open-ground walk.
There is time for kit questions, route-card habits, and how to keep progressing between courses.
Meet initially in Capel Curig, then move into the Ogwen Valley and nearby Snowdonia venues for practical navigation on rougher tracks and open ground.
Exact timing, parking, and any daily venue changes are confirmed in your joining instructions. Allow extra time on busy weekends.
This course suits adults who already have basic map and compass skills and can usually plan and follow a marked-path journey while tracking position. You want to move into rougher tracks and open terrain with fewer path cues.
If you have completed a novice course or equivalent self-taught practice, this is the natural next step for more complex mountain navigation.
Meet initially in Capel Curig, then travel into the Ogwen Valley and surrounding Snowdonia venues for practical sessions on rougher ground. Exact timing and pins are confirmed in your joining instructions.
Stay nearby so early starts and afternoon debriefs are realistic across both days.
Expect personal pacing over varied slopes, poor-visibility and darkness strategies, micro-navigation to small features, pacing and timing over 100-1000m, Naismith and Tranter timing estimates, dead reckoning, aiming off, attack points, resection overview, catching features, multi-leg complex routes, and route cards.
Coaching stays outdoor and practical, with repeated ground practice rather than long classroom talks.
Bring weather-proof hill clothing and boots, packed lunch and drinks, a daypack, OS OL17 Snowdonia 1:25,000, and a working compass. A Silva Type 4/54 style compass is recommended, plus a notebook and pen.
Ask the team before you buy kit if you are unsure which compass or map case to bring for open-ground work.
Accommodation is not included. Capel Curig, Betws-y-Coed, and Llanberis are practical bases within a short drive of usual venues.
Book flexible lodging in case daily venues shift slightly with weather or teaching needs.
You need fitness for full outdoor teaching days on rough tracks and open mountain ground. The pace is instructional, but you will cover more awkward terrain than a marked-path novice day.
Prior full hill days help you stay sharp for micro-nav practice when tired.
Venues are chosen from the forecast each day. Poor visibility is often useful for this syllabus, though extreme conditions may shorten or reshape a session.
The team will be in touch if plans need to change. Pack full waterproofs and spare warm layers either way.
Food is not included on either day. Bring a packed lunch, snacks, and enough water or a hot drink for long outdoor teaching sessions.
Evening meals are your own arrangement in Capel Curig, Betws-y-Coed, Llanberis, or nearby villages after each day.
Maximum ratio is six clients to one instructor so coaching stays personal while you practise micro-nav, timing, and complex multi-leg routes.
Live availability shows how many spaces remain on your date. Smaller groups help everyone get enough hands-on map time.
Transport to Capel Curig and daily venues is not included. You need your own vehicle or arrangements to reach the meet and follow any short moves between teaching areas.
Budget for parking where venues require it, and share cars within your party when that keeps logistics simple.
