Exclusive Highland Snowmobiling on Eyjafjallajökull – Extended Glacier Ride

Spend more time on the ice with an extended snowmobiling experience that explores higher and quieter sections of Eyjafjallajökull. This longer-format tour is designed for riders who want a deeper, more flexible glacier journey, with routes adapted to conditions on the day and plenty of riding time.

🧭 Key Details

• Duration: 4 hours 30 minutes
• Snowmobiling format: Shared or single snowmobile
• Minimum age (passenger): 6 years
• Minimum age (driver): 18 years with a full valid driving licence

❄️ What to Expect

The experience begins at the main base on Road 249, where you’ll meet your guide for a detailed briefing covering safety, snowmobile controls and how the day will be shaped by weather and ground conditions. You’ll be fitted with insulated outerwear, helmet and protective gear before heading towards the glacier. This tour allows more flexibility than shorter rides, with route choices made to suit visibility, snow conditions and group ability.

Once on the glacier, the riding time is noticeably longer and more varied. The terrain is still rated Easy, but the extended duration allows you to explore wider snowfields and higher areas of the ice cap where conditions allow. The pace is steady and controlled, giving beginners time to settle in while still offering experienced riders space to enjoy longer stretches of riding.

Throughout the tour, your guide shares insight into glacier formation, volcanic influence and how Eyjafjallajökull continues to change. Stops are built in for photos and to take in the scale of the highland environment in clear conditions. This is not a rigid follow-the-leader loop, but a flexible glacier journey shaped around the day’s conditions and the group.

📍 Location

Eyjafjallajökull sits along Iceland’s south coast and rises quickly into highland terrain, making it one of the most accessible glaciers for extended snowmobiling. Its upper areas offer wide, open snowfields and long sightlines across South Iceland when conditions are good.

The meeting point is Brú Base on Road 249, approximately 3 km past Seljalandsfoss near Hvolsvöllur. This base serves as the operational hub for glacier and highland tours in the area. Pick-up and drop-off services are available from selected locations for an additional fee when arranged in advance.

✅ Prerequisites

No previous snowmobiling experience is required, but participants should be comfortable spending several hours outdoors in cold conditions and following guide instructions. The route and pace are adapted to suit the group.

Drivers must be at least 18 years old and hold a full, valid driving licence. Learner permits, tractor licences and motorcycle licences are not accepted. This experience is not recommended for guests with serious back problems, heart conditions, or during pregnancy.

🌍 Why Choose Us

This operation has extensive experience running longer glacier and highland routes, allowing guides to adapt plans rather than rely on fixed circuits. That flexibility is particularly valuable on extended snowmobile tours, where conditions can change quickly with altitude and weather.

Guides are locals with strong glacier knowledge, many with Search and Rescue backgrounds. Their approach prioritises clear decision-making, well-maintained equipment and a calm, structured experience, allowing guests to focus on enjoying longer time on the ice.
