Picture yourself drifting on a sheltered Arctic fjord in a warm survival suit, mountains rising on either side and the sky opening above you. This is a gentle introduction to cold-water floating, and you do not need any swimming skills or prior experience, just curiosity and a willingness to try something genuinely different.
You'll gather at the harbour in Tromso before a short drive to the launch site on Kvaloya, where the city gives way to coastal road and open water views. Your guide fits you in a premium thermal survival suit and talks you through safety step by step before anyone enters the fjord.
Once you are floating, the suit does most of the work and you stay warm and buoyant while you look up at the fjord walls above you. On winter evenings from October to March, clear skies may even bring a glimpse of the aurora between the clouds while you lie back on the surface.
Back on shore you will share hot drinks and freshly baked Norwegian waffles with the group, collect your Arctic diploma, and receive the photos and videos from your session before everyone heads back to Tromso together.
Sessions run on Malangen fjord, a short drive from Tromso harbour through coastal scenery on Kvaloya that sets the tone before you reach the water. The fjord here is sheltered enough for first-timers to feel at ease, yet the setting still feels unmistakably Arctic in every direction you look.
Because Tromso sits inside the Arctic Circle, even a half-day outing like this feels properly polar without needing a multi-day expedition or a long journey into the wilderness. You get a real taste of the north within easy reach of the city centre.
The minimum age for this experience is 10 years, and survival suits are designed to fit guests between 150 cm and 200 cm tall. You do not need to swim or have any prior experience, but you should be comfortable wearing a full thermal suit and spending time outdoors in cold air before and after your time in the water.
Pack warm base layers plus an extra sweater to wear inside the suit, and tell us ahead of time if you have any mobility needs or sizing questions. We would rather answer those before you travel than leave them until the morning of your session.
We keep groups small so your guide can check every suit properly, answer questions as they come up, and stay beside you in the water rather than managing a large crowd from the shore. These fjords are where we work every week, and we want you to feel looked after from the harbour meet-up through to the last waffle.
Your survival suit, safety kit, transport to the launch site, hot refreshments and session photos are all part of the package, so you can simply arrive in Tromso and focus on the float itself without sorting extras on the day.
Meet your guide in front of the Magic Ice Bar at Kaigata 4 in Tromso harbour, where the group gathers before heading out together. You will check in, confirm your sizing details for the survival suit, and get a warm welcome while your guide explains how the rest of the afternoon or evening will run.
Travel from the city to the Malangen fjord launch site on Kvaloya, which takes roughly 25 minutes by road along the coast. You will leave the bustle of Tromso behind and watch the scenery open up as you approach the quieter Arctic waters where the floating session takes place.
Your guide walks you through survival suit fitting, floating technique and the safety procedures that keep everyone comfortable in the water. You will have plenty of time to ask questions and adjust your layers before anyone from the group enters the fjord.
Enter the fjord in your thermal suit and float under close supervision while your guide stays with the group on the water. No swimming skills are needed because the suit keeps you buoyant, and you can simply relax while you take in the Arctic silence, the mountain views and, on evening tours, the possibility of aurora displays overhead.
Celebrate completing your first Arctic float with a signed diploma, hot tea or coffee, and freshly baked Norwegian waffles shared with the group. Photos and videos from the session are passed on to you at no extra cost so you can relive the moment once you are back on dry land.
Return to Tromso city centre with your guide after the session, with the drive giving you a little time to warm up and chat about the experience. You will have a chance to change out of your suit, grab a hot drink if you want one, and unwind before heading back to your accommodation for the evening.
We meet in front of the Magic Ice Bar at Kaigata 4, right in Tromso harbour where the city meets the water. Your confirmation will have the exact meet-up spot and time so you know where to find your guide among the harbour buildings.
City pickup can sometimes be arranged if you have booked that option in advance. When that applies, your guide will confirm where to wait on the day so you are not left guessing at the kerb.
You do not need to swim at all for this experience. The survival suit keeps you on the surface and traps warmth around your body while your guide stays nearby in the water with the group.
Before anyone enters the fjord, we run through how the suit works, how to relax while floating, and what to do if you want to come out of the water early. There is no pressure to stay in longer than you are comfortable.
Guests need to be at least 10 years old and fit the survival suit sizing, which generally means a height between 150 cm and 200 cm for a safe and comfortable seal. We ask for your height when you book so we can check the suit will work before you travel.
The suits are not made for larger body shapes, and we would rather be upfront about that than have you arrive and find the fit does not work. Get in touch before you book if you want honest advice on sizing.
Layer up underneath with a thermal base layer and then a proper sweater, rather than just a thin t-shirt that will not keep you warm inside the suit. You will wear the survival suit over the top of those layers once you are at the launch site.
Bring a warm jacket for before and after the session, and pack spare inner layers if you would like a dry change on the drive back to Tromso. The air temperature at the fjord can feel sharp even when the suit itself is warm.
The thermal survival suit, safety briefing, guided floating time, return transport from Tromso to the fjord site and back, hot drinks, Norwegian waffles, a towel, your Arctic diploma and session photos and videos are all covered in the price you see.
Your guide handles the kit and the logistics on the day, so you can focus on being in the water and enjoying the scenery rather than worrying about what is included or where you need to be next.
On evening trips between October and March, clear skies can bring aurora views over the fjord while you are floating on your back. We cannot promise a show on any given night, but the location is well away from city lights and opens up a wide slice of sky.
Your guide will keep an eye on conditions throughout the session and let you know if it is worth pausing your float to look up. Even without the aurora, the winter light over the water is worth the trip on its own.
We run with between 2 and 12 guests so it never feels like a coach tour with strangers packed in at every step. That is deliberate, because everyone needs help with their suit and a fair amount of time actually in the water.
Solo travellers should contact us before booking, as some dates need a minimum pair to run the session. We are happy to advise which departures already have enough guests confirmed.
Plan on roughly three hours door to door, from the harbour meet-up and the drive to Malangen through to the safety briefing, your time floating, waffles and photos, and the return to Tromso.
The time you actually spend in the fjord depends on the group and the weather on the day, but we keep the pace relaxed so you are not rushed in or out of the water.
Wind, temperature and sea state can all affect whether we float on a given day, and your guide will adapt the plan rather than pushing ahead regardless. We will not send anyone into the fjord if the conditions are unsafe for the group.
If floating is not possible, we will talk through the best option for your date and work with you on what can still go ahead. Safety always comes before the schedule.
Getting to Magic Ice Bar at Kaigata 4 is down to you unless hotel pickup was agreed when you booked your place. Buses and taxis serve the harbour area well, and it is a straightforward walk from much of central Tromso.
Transport from Tromso out to the fjord launch site and back after the session is included in the tour itself. You only need to make your own way to the harbour for the start of the morning or afternoon.
