Ulaanbaatar is where most Mongolia trips begin and end. Chinggis Khaan International Airport lies south of the city, and most operators collect guests from hotels near Sukhbaatar Square or along Peace Avenue. The capital can feel hectic after the steppe, but it is the place to sort last-minute kit, visit the National Museum and stock up on tugrik before a long drive.
Traffic around Sukhbaatar Square is slow at rush hour, so allow time for airport pickups. Supermarkets stock trail snacks, sunscreen and SIM cards from the main operators. If you arrive jet-lagged, book Terelj for the next day rather than a dawn departure on a long westbound drive.
The Gandan monastery and the winter palace of the Bogd Khan are easy half-day visits if you have a free afternoon in town. Black market and department stores sell felt slippers and cashmere at prices that beat airport duty free.
Before you head to the steppe
Half-day hikes and beginner rides in Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, and city-fringe walks in the Bogd Khan protected area. Ulaanbaatar is the hub for trips across central Mongolia.
