Jump into a proper whitewater rafting session on some of Cumbria’s best natural rivers. Expect fast-moving water, teamwork, and plenty of time getting used to the flow of the river. Each trip is shaped around the group and conditions, so no two sessions feel the same.
The session begins with a full safety briefing and introduction to the equipment. You’ll be fitted with a wetsuit, buoyancy aid, and helmet before heading to the riverbank. Once on the water, your guide will run through paddling techniques and how to work together as a team. The first section is usually about getting comfortable in the raft, learning how to move with the current, and understanding how to respond to instructions.
As the session progresses, you’ll move into more active sections of the river. Expect wave trains, small drops, and faster currents that require proper teamwork to navigate. Guides are constantly reading the river and adjusting the route to suit the group, making sure the experience feels engaging without being overwhelming. Breaks are built in throughout, giving you time to reset, take in the surroundings, and get ready for the next stretch.
By the end, you’ll have covered a varied section of river, experienced different types of water movement, and built confidence in the raft. It’s physical at times, but manageable, with plenty of support from the guide. The session wraps up with time to get changed and reflect on the day, usually with a few good moments to talk about.
The experience takes place across a range of rivers in Cumbria and the Lake District, selected based on water levels and daily conditions. This flexible approach means you’ll always be on a section of river that offers the best possible experience at the time of your session, rather than a fixed route that may not suit the conditions.
A commonly used meeting point is at Leven Valley Community Centre in Backbarrow, Ulverston, Cumbria, LA12 8QF, although final details are always confirmed the day before. Most locations are within easy reach of the M6, around 20 minutes from Junction 36, with straightforward access and parking available nearby.
Participants should be comfortable around water and prepared for a physically active session. A basic level of fitness is required, as you’ll be paddling and working as part of a team throughout the experience. Regular breaks are included, and the pace is adjusted to suit the group, so you won’t be pushed beyond what’s manageable. The maximum weight limit for participants is 120kg due to safety equipment requirements.
Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult guardian. You’ll also need to bring swimwear to wear under your kit, a towel, dry clothes for afterwards, and sturdy closed-toe footwear that you don’t mind getting wet. Personal medication should be brought along if needed.
The team is made up of experienced whitewater kayakers and outdoor guides who have spent years working on rivers both in the UK and abroad. Their focus is on delivering real river experiences rather than artificial or overly controlled environments, using their knowledge to select locations that genuinely suit the conditions on the day. Every session is guided, safety-focused, and built around the group taking part.
There’s a strong emphasis on keeping things straightforward and enjoyable while maintaining high standards. Quality equipment, clear instruction, and honest communication all come as part of the experience. The approach is simple: choose the right river, run it properly, and make sure everyone leaves having had a good time on the water.
No previous experience is needed to take part. The session is designed so that complete beginners can get involved and feel comfortable on the water. Guides provide a full briefing at the start and explain everything clearly before you begin.
As you move through the session, you’ll build confidence naturally. The guide will continue to support you with instructions and tips while you’re on the river, helping you improve as you go without it feeling overwhelming.
River levels are carefully monitored to make sure the experience is worthwhile. If conditions aren’t suitable for proper whitewater rafting, the team won’t run a reduced or disappointing session.
Instead, you’ll be offered an alternative such as whitewater tubing or a river journey that still includes moving water and sections of interest. The aim is always to give you a day that feels worth your time.
If you book as a smaller group, you may share a raft with other participants. This is common in rafting and often adds to the experience, as you’ll work together as a team to navigate the river.
If you’d prefer to stay as a private group, you can arrange for your own raft. This guarantees that only your group will be together for the session.
You should arrive wearing swimwear under your clothes, ready to change into your wetsuit. Bringing a towel and a full set of dry clothes for afterwards is essential, as you will get wet during the session.
Footwear is particularly important. You’ll need sturdy, closed-toe shoes such as old trainers, boots, or proper water shoes. Sandals, crocs, or beach shoes aren’t suitable for safety reasons.
Rafting does require some effort, as you’ll be paddling and working with your group to move through the river. That said, the session is designed to be manageable for most people with a basic level of fitness.
There are regular breaks built in, giving you time to rest and reset before continuing. The guide will also adjust the pace depending on how the group is getting on.
Safety is a key part of every session. You’ll be provided with all the necessary protective equipment, including a helmet and buoyancy aid, and shown how to use it correctly before entering the water.
Guides are experienced in reading river conditions and managing groups in moving water. They stay in control throughout the session, giving clear instructions and making decisions based on safety at all times.
Because river locations vary depending on conditions, the exact meeting point is confirmed the day before your session. You’ll receive clear instructions, including directions and parking details.
This approach ensures you’re always taken to the best available river section rather than a fixed location that may not offer a good experience on the day.
Yes, participants aged 10 and above can join the session. It’s a great option for families looking to do something active together in the outdoors.
Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult guardian, who will also take part in the activity and share the experience.
We had an amaxinng experience tubing just outside Kendal on the river Kent, truly breathtaking scenery and such a great adventure to accompany such idyllic scenery. Our guide Dan was a top bloke and really knowledgeable, he took us to some incredible areas and was really helpful and guided everyone…
