Two days on Cederberg sandstone give you sport routes and bigger walls in the same trip. Your instructor matches grades to the group, coaches clips and rest stances, and moves you when the sun cooks a face. Nights nearby keep the days about climbing rather than a long commute.
Mornings start with a harness check and a walk to the chosen wall, then you spend the day clipping bolts and getting plenty of goes. If the group is ready and the rock is friendly, you step onto a longer sandstone pitch with the same calm briefing you had on the shorter routes. Heat and wind decide the face, and a shady kloof can be a better classroom than a famous wall in full sun.
Instructors who know these kloofs well enough to move you when the sun hits a wall turn two days on sandstone into proper climbing rather than a rushed tick list. Small ratios keep the coaching personal.
Shared ropes and a clear kit list mean you arrive ready, then spend the hours on the rock. Guides hold mountain and multi-pitch qualifications, and they treat Cederberg heat with the same respect they give the rope work.
After transfer or meet at the crag parking, you run through harness, helmet and belay calls before getting on bolted sandstone routes matched to the group. The focus is plenty of goes, rest stances and calm coaching rather than one hard pitch.
Your instructor shifts crags if the sun or wind makes the first wall a poor choice. You stay nearby overnight so day two starts on the rock rather than in Cape Town traffic.
The second day targets longer lines on Wolfberg or neighbouring big walls when conditions and experience allow, still with the same small-group coaching. Shorter routes remain an option if heat builds or the group prefers volume over height.
You pack up kit after the last climb and transfer back to Cape Town when collection is included. Self drivers return to their vehicles at the agreed finish time.
When transfers are included, wait in your Cape Town lobby at the stated time with climbing layers packed and your phone on. Two day trips leave on a firm clock, so a missed call at the hotel can mean a delayed start on the rock.
Drivers following the pin should allow for gravel roads and arrive early enough for a harness check before the first pitch. Bring a card or cash for any farm gate mentioned in your pre trip notes, and keep valuables out of sight in the car.
Closed shoes you can climb in are essential; bring a climbing pair if you own them. Pack a sun hat, extra water, a light long sleeve for belays and a warm layer for shady cliffs, because sandstone glare and dry air catch people out.
The pack list before departure covers overnight clothing for the camp night. This is an outdoor crag, so do not expect a gym changing room at the parking bay, and arrive dressed to walk to the wall.
Yes. Routes are chosen for the group, and your instructor coaches clips and calls from the first pitch. Indoor wall time helps but is not required, because the day is built around learning on real sandstone.
If everyone in the party is brand new, say so. Mixed groups still work when the easy lines stay busy and the keener climbers get a steeper go between turns.
Guests should be at least 12. A participating adult should stay with younger climbers for both days, including the walk ins and the belay, not as a spectator at the farm gate.
Smaller hands and shorter reaches are fine on the right routes. We would rather pick a friendly wall than force a famous one that looks good in photos and feels miserable on the rock.
Shared ropes, harnesses and helmets are provided. Personal climbing shoes are optional if you already have a pair that fits, and many guests climb happily in grippy approach shoes on the easier pitches.
Approach shoes with grip are useful for the walk in. Smooth fashion trainers are a poor idea on sandstone scree, especially when you are tired at the end of day two.
Plan for two full days outdoors, not a two hour taster. Shade, water and an early start keep the rope time high in the heat, which is how you actually get better on the wall.
Evenings are nearby so you are not commuting back to Cape Town between pitches. That overnight is what turns the trip into climbing rather than a rushed day ticket.
Bigger sandstone pitches appear when the group and the conditions allow. The trip is built so sport routes come first and longer pitches follow if everyone is comfortable with the calls and the heat.
Heat on an open face can mean a shady kloof instead, and that is still real climbing. Your instructor will not drag tired beginners onto a long wall just because it is famous.
Nights follow the plan for this trip, close enough that the next morning is about climbing rather than a long drive. Your pre trip message names the style of overnight so you can pack the right bag.
Pack dusty clothes and a cleaner shirt for the evening. Farm stays are simple and friendly, and early nights make the second day on the rock much sweeter.
Cederberg rock can bake, with dry wind and little shade at the base of some walls. Guides start early, chase shade and will change walls if a face is unsafe for belaying.
A long sleeve, a wide hat and more water than you think you need are the unglamorous secrets of a good day. Pale sandstone glare is as tiring as the climbing itself.
Light weather can still work on some walls. A proper soak makes sandstone greasy, and your instructor will not pretend otherwise just to stick to the original topo.
The plan can shift to a drier kloof or a later start. Safety sits above the first photo of the trip, and greasy rock is how people slip at the second bolt.
Groups are usually up to four so the rope time stays high and the briefing stays unhurried. You are not waiting behind a dozen people for a single easy line.
That small ratio is why first timers and keener climbers can share a crag. Tell us the mix of experience so the first wall of the morning matches the whole party.
No. Grippy closed shoes are enough for many of the sport pitches, and a well fitting climbing pair is a bonus if you already own one. Tight rental style shoes on hot sandstone can cut a day short.
If you are buying shoes for this trip, bring them broken in. Brand new edging shoes on a two day trip are a classic way to collect blisters instead of pitches.
