Working nets with a local fisherman is the heart of this five hour outing near Rovaniemi. You watch traditional Finnish styles on the ice, then try the same net techniques and hook and line methods yourself. Pickup in Rovaniemi is included, and the pace stays practical rather than rushed.
Out on the ice the fisherman first shows how the nets are set, checked and lifted, talking through the traditional styles used on these lakes. You stay close enough to handle the mesh yourself, so the demonstration turns into practice rather than a talk from the bank.
Later in the five hours you also try hook and line methods, so the day covers both net work and the shorter rods used through a hole. The fisherman explains why a net sits where it does and how the two styles differ, then you move between the gear as the ice and the catch allow.
Frozen water in the countryside around Rovaniemi is the workplace, chosen for a quiet shore where nets can be worked without a crowd. You travel there with us from the city, so you do not need to find the lake yourself.
We collect you in Rovaniemi. Share your hotel or cabin address so we can plan the run out. A return drop-off is not part of this outing, and we will confirm how you get back into town when we set the meeting time.
Traditional net work is taught from scratch, so no previous fishing experience is required. You should be happy to stand on a frozen lake for several hours and to handle wet mesh with cold hands.
Wear warm layers and winter boots. Tell us who is coming so we can shape the session around your group. Everyone who joins should be able to follow simple safety instructions on the ice.
Looking after visitors in Finnish Lapland has been this family's work since 1979, now in a third generation. A local fisherman, not a coach party, runs the session, so you see how nets are actually used on these lakes in winter.
Five hours gives you time to try more than one method and to stay with the gear while it is working. The outing stays with your own group on quiet ice, with Finnish guiding that treats this as a first session rather than a competition.
We collect you in Rovaniemi and travel out to quiet frozen water in the countryside. The fisherman can talk through the plan for the five hours before you step onto the ice, so you already know whether you will start with nets or with a hole. Wear your warm layers for the transfer, as you will go straight from the vehicle onto the snow.
The first working block is the nets. You see how they are set, checked and lifted, then you handle the mesh yourself so the traditional styles sit in your hands rather than in a talk. The fisherman stays with you through the first lifts, and we keep this part calm on purpose.
Later you also try hook and line methods through a hole, so the day covers both styles. The fisherman explains how the two approaches differ on the same lake, and you can move between the gear as the ice allows. The aim is to leave knowing how net fishing works here in winter, whether or not a fish comes up.
You do not need any fishing background. The fisherman starts with how the nets are set and lifted, then you try the same movements yourself. Hook and line methods come later in the five hours, so you can compare the two styles on the same ice.
The pace stays practical. Questions are welcome while the gear is in your hands, and we can linger on one method if you want more time with the mesh before you pick up a rod.
This is an easy outing rather than a long hike. You should be comfortable standing and walking on a frozen lake for several hours, and happy to handle wet nets with cold fingers.
Dress in warm layers you can add or remove, and wear winter boots with a decent sole. We can pause between lifts so you can warm your hands before the next pull.
Tell us the ages in your group so we can say whether the ice and the five hours will suit everyone who wants to come. The outing is an easy introduction, and the fisherman keeps the first lifts calm.
Everyone who joins should be able to stand on the ice for several hours and follow simple safety instructions. Bring extra layers for younger guests, as they cool down faster once you stop moving.
Wear warm layers, a hat, gloves and winter boots. Five hours on open ice, plus wet mesh, will cool you faster than a winter walk through town.
Bring sunglasses if the snow is bright, and a small dry bag for your phone. Have your hotel or cabin address ready so we can plan pickup in Rovaniemi.
Net fishing is a real day on the water, not a guaranteed catch. You learn how the nets are set and how hook and line methods work through a hole, and the fisherman reads the ice with you.
Some days the nets come up busy and some days they stay quiet. The outing is still the demonstration, the practice, and time on the lake with someone who works these waters through the winter.
The outing is five hours in all. That includes the run out from Rovaniemi, the net demonstration, time to handle the mesh yourself, and the hook and line stretch later in the session.
We keep the pace unhurried so you can learn both styles properly. Pickup in Rovaniemi is part of the plan, and we will confirm timings once we have your address.
The session needs a sound ice surface, so we watch the temperature and the state of the lake before we set out. Soft ice, a sudden thaw or very thin cover can mean we have to move your time or stop the day.
If we cannot run, we will be in touch as early as we can with the next step. Please treat this as a winter activity that depends on the lake staying hard enough to walk and work nets, not as an indoor session.
Pickup in Rovaniemi is included. Share your hotel or cabin address so we can plan the run out to the lake. We will send you a time once that address is with us.
This outing does not include a return drop-off. We will confirm how you get back into town when we set the meeting time, so you are not left guessing at the edge of the ice.
Meals and drinks are not part of this outing, so eat before we collect you or bring a small snack of your own. The day is about the nets and the line work, not a sit-down meal on the ice.
The fisherman runs the session and shows you the methods on the lake. Pack the warm layers and boots you already own. If you have questions about what we will have with us on the day, ask us in advance.
This session is built around nets and a local fisherman, with hook and line methods as the second skill. A quiet lake ice fishing outing is about drilling holes and attracting fish under the ice with the short rods, without the net work.
If you want to see how traditional mesh is set and lifted, this is the five hour outing. If you want a first go at jigging through a hole, choose the quieter lake session instead.
