Rioux Falls is a short walk on the east-central slopes, with shaded forest paths, easy river crossings and a clear pool at the base. It is a simple half-day away from the busier coast, and it works well for beginners and families. Your guide talks about the valley as you go, so the short route still has plenty to it.
You meet at the Shell station on Royal Road La Flora, then walk shaded tracks as the river grows louder and the air cools under the trees. Footing stays easy for most of the route, with the guide pausing at crossings so no one slips on wet stone after rain.
At Rioux Falls you can paddle in the shallows, swim when depth and flow look good, or simply sit on warm rock and watch the water while the party catches its breath. The return follows the same gentle line, which makes this a popular first waterfall hike for visitors who do not want a full mountain day.
The falls sit inland from La Flora on Mauritius east-central slopes, green and quiet compared with the busier beach towns and a straightforward drive from Port Louis or the airport if you allow time for traffic.
After rain the path can be muddy but remains short, so the main change is footwear rather than difficulty. Morning starts feel freshest before the sun builds on the open sections near the river.
Guests from five years with a paying adult on this easy route. Beginners and families are welcome when everyone wears sensible shoes for forest paths and river rock.
Water shoes or grippy trainers help on crossings, and a snack plus bottle of water is worthwhile even on the shorter hour on trail. Pack swim gear if you hope to get in the pool.
Years of guiding on Mauritius trails means clear briefings, realistic timing between waterfalls, and a bit of background on the plants, birds and rock you pass. Swim stops and viewpoint pauses are part of the day, so it does not turn into a rush back to the car park.
Local guides grew up exploring these valleys and ridges, and they train with professional outdoor safety standards before they lead anyone across wet rock, river crossings or forest shade. That shows in the way they brief footwear, hydration and pace before you leave the parking area, and in how they reposition the group when the gorge is slick after rain.
Meet your guide, check kit and hear how the route will run on the day. Your guide checks kit, pace and weather before you move on from this stop. Photo pauses stay on stable ground so the group does not block narrow paths for others.
Follow forest and river paths with photo stops and guide support on wet rock. Photo pauses stay on stable ground so the group does not block narrow paths for others.
Walk back to the start with time for final questions. Expect a quick safety reminder whenever the trail gets steeper, wetter or more exposed. There is time to ask questions, drink water and adjust layers before the next section.
Meet at Shell station, Royal Road La Flora. Aim to arrive a few minutes before your start time so the guide can run through safety points, check footwear and answer questions while everyone is still fresh.
Drivers from coastal hotels often know the trailhead by name; if you are ordering a taxi, share the meeting point pin rather than only a resort lobby so you are dropped at the forest or coast access, not the wrong side of the village.
Most guests spend around 1 hour on foot for this route, plus a few minutes for the safety briefing at Shell station, Royal Road La Flora.
Timing shifts slightly with group pace, photo stops and how long you linger at pools when the water is calm.
You need comfortable walking fitness for forest paths and river rock. Tell your guide if anyone in the party prefers a slower pace on uphill sections.
Steep or technical moments are briefed before you reach them so you can decide whether to follow or wait at a safe spot.
Closed-toe shoes with grip are essential on wet basalt and roots. Quick-dry clothes work well when spray or pool stops are part of the day.
Pack sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent for humid forest sections, and keep electronics in a waterproof pouch in your bag.
Rioux has a clear pool at the base of the falls where you can paddle or swim when the guide is happy with depth and flow on the day.
Bring swimwear and a towel even for a short dip, and follow guide signals when currents or depth change after rain.

Light rain can still allow a safe walk, while heavy downpours may raise rivers and make stone slick. Your guide may shorten the route or skip a swim stop when the water is high.
If the rock is still wet from overnight rain, expect a slower pace and extra care at crossings and pool edges.
Yes, bring a phone or camera for cascades and viewpoints. Keep gear in a dry bag near water and pause on stable ground rather than mid crossing.
Your guide can suggest the best angles without blocking narrow paths for other hikers. Your guide keeps the group together on narrow sections and builds in time for water, photos and questions without rushing the trail.
Forest sections often bring tropical birds, lizards and butterflies along the path. Pools may hold small fish in the shallows on waterfall routes.
Watch where you step, stay on the marked line through vegetation, and avoid feeding animals you meet.
