Head high above Höfn on a guided super jeep drive that climbs around 1000 metres into the mountains, opening onto sweeping views over the peaks and out toward Vatnajökull. The specially adapted vehicle handles the rough mountain tracks with ease, so you can relax and take in the scenery while your guide does the driving.
Once underway, the super jeep climbs steadily up mountain tracks that regular vehicles cannot manage, gaining height with every bend. Your guide stops at viewpoints along the way, giving you time to step out and take in the peaks around Höfn and the wide sweep of Vatnajökull in the distance. The pace stays relaxed throughout, with plenty of chances for photos before the drive back down.
As the track steepens, the jeep's specialist suspension and tyres smooth out the rougher sections, so the ride stays comfortable even when the terrain looks challenging from outside. Guides know exactly where to pause for the clearest views, timing stops around light and visibility rather than a fixed schedule.
The tour departs from a meeting point at Smyrlabjörg, close to Höfn in the Hornafjörður district of southeast Iceland, right at the edge of the mountains that rise above the coastal plain. This part of the country sits in the shadow of Vatnajökull, Europe's largest ice cap, giving the drive a dramatic backdrop from the very first climb.
The wider area is known for its mix of mountains, glacier tongues and black sand coastline, all within a short drive of Höfn itself, making it a natural base for exploring the southeast from several different angles.
No experience or particular fitness is needed, since you stay seated in the vehicle throughout the drive. The tour welcomes families and older travellers alike, with a minimum age of just 2 and a relaxed pace suited to all abilities.
A minimum group size of 2 people applies to each booking, so solo travellers may need to join a shared departure. Warm clothing is worth packing, as it can be noticeably breezy and colder at the higher viewpoints even on a calm day at sea level.
Guides know the mountain tracks well and choose viewpoints based on the day's visibility, so you get the best outlook available on the day. The super jeeps are built for this terrain, giving a smooth and confident ride even as the track gets steeper and rougher toward the top.
With a low minimum age and no fitness requirements, this is one of the easiest ways to reach genuine high mountain views above Höfn. The guide's local knowledge means the route adapts to conditions rather than following a rigid plan regardless of weather.
