Take a first step into breath-hold diving on a Try Freediving sea session in Bouley Bay. Without scuba tanks, you practise relaxed breathing and controlled breath holds while moving through the water with light kit and close guidance from an instructor.
Your session begins on shore with a clear briefing on freediving fundamentals and safety, covering how breath-hold diving differs from snorkelling or scuba and what to expect once you enter the sea. Kit is fitted before you leave the beach, so mask, snorkel, fins, and wetsuit feel comfortable before the first water skills begin.
In the sea, the focus stays on calm breathing, simple breath-hold practice, and efficient movement without tanks or heavy buoyancy devices. Your instructor keeps the session within comfortable depths and conditions for a taster, with close supervision throughout rather than chasing depth or certification skills from a full course.
Meet at Bouley Bay on Jersey's north coast, overlooking a sheltered rocky bay with practical shore access for a sea try session. Free parking is available at the bay, and the short walk from the car park to the water makes it a workable base for briefing, kit, and entry when conditions are suitable.
The bay's clear coastal water and quieter shoreline give a steady setting for first freediving practice close to shore. Instructors choose routes and water time based on wind, swell, and visibility on the day, keeping learning useful without committing beginners to exposed open water.
No previous freediving experience is required. You should be comfortable in the water and able to swim, whether you are completely new to underwater sports or already scuba dive and want a lighter breath-hold introduction.
As with other water sports, good general health helps. Follow any medical guidance your instructor gives before entering the water, and say if you have ear, sinus, or breathing concerns so they can advise whether the try session is appropriate for you on the day.
This taster is run by an SSI freediving centre with instructors used to teaching complete beginners alongside scuba divers who want a different way into the water. Equipment is included, guidance is hands-on, and the session is paced as an introduction rather than a rush into advanced depth work.
You get a structured first look at breath-hold skills in a real sea setting, with safety and comfort kept ahead of performance. If you enjoy it, the same team can point you toward the SSI Basic Freediver course or ongoing club practice as a clear next step.
Meet at Bouley Bay for paperwork and a clear introduction to what breath-hold diving involves. Your instructor covers how the try session differs from snorkelling or scuba, and what you will practise once you are in the sea.
Kit is fitted before you leave the shore, including mask, snorkel, fins, and a wetsuit as needed, with a weight belt added only if it helps comfort and trim.
On shore or in sheltered water, you practise relaxed breathing and the basic body position used for freediving. Equalisation and buddy-aware habits are introduced so you understand how to stay safe before any deeper practice.
The pace stays beginner friendly. There is no push for depth here; the goal is comfort with the fundamentals under close guidance.
Move into the sea for guided practice, focusing on calm breath holds and efficient movement without tanks. Your instructor keeps the session within comfortable depths and conditions for a taster.
If wind, swell, or visibility are unsuitable, the team will rearrange rather than force a poor learning environment. Expect roughly two hours end to end for briefing, kit, and water time.
No. This is an introductory sea try session for people who have not freedived before, or who have only snorkelled and want to try breath-hold skills with guidance.
Your instructor covers the basics before and during the water time, so you can focus on staying relaxed and learning at a sensible pace.
No. This listing is the Try Freediving sea session. It is a shorter taster, not the full SSI Basic Freediver programme.
If you enjoy it, you can ask about the Basic Freediver course, which adds online learning, further in-water sessions, and a certification path.
Essential freediving kit is provided for the session, including mask, snorkel, fins, and a wetsuit as needed. A weight belt may be used when appropriate for comfort and trim.
Bring your own swimwear and a towel. If you prefer your own mask, you can usually bring that too.
Plan for around 2 hours in total. That covers briefing, kit, and guided practice in the sea.
Exact timings can vary slightly with group size and conditions, but the session is sized as a half-morning or half-afternoon style taster rather than a full-day course.
Meet at Bouley Bay in Trinity, Jersey. Free parking is available at the bay.
Your confirmation will repeat the meeting details. Arrive a little early so there is time for forms and kit before you head to the water.
When taught with proper briefing and close supervision, a beginner try session is paced carefully. You practise under instruction rather than pushing for depth.
Listen to your instructor, stay within the skills covered on the day, and tell them straight away if you feel uneasy. Safety always comes first.
Bring swimwear, a towel, and a warm layer for afterwards. Water and a light snack can help if you have been travelling to the bay.
Leave jewellery and unnecessary valuables behind. Sun cream is useful for time on shore, though rinse skin if you apply it before putting on a wetsuit.
Freediving in the sea depends on safe conditions. If wind, swell, or visibility make the planned sea session unsuitable, the team will get in touch to rearrange.
Do not assume the session will go ahead in poor conditions. Safety and a useful learning environment matter more than sticking to a calendar slot.
Yes. Many scuba divers try freediving because the kit is lighter and the feel in the water is different. Prior scuba experience is not required, and it is not a substitute for freediving instruction.
Whether you dive with tanks already or are completely new to underwater sports, the try session starts from beginner freediving skills.
A common next step is the SSI Basic Freediver course, which builds on the try session with structured training and a pathway to certification.
There is also a freedive club for continuing practice after training. Ask your instructor at the end of the session which option fits your goals.
