Bari reads best from the water. The Old Port skyline looks different when you are sitting on a traditional wooden gozzo with the Adriatic breeze in your face, and the rocky inlets along this coast are the sort of places you simply cannot walk into from the lungomare. This outing leaves the quay with a local skipper who knows where to anchor when the sea is calm, threads along the waterfront at an unhurried pace, and builds in time for a swim when conditions allow. An Apulian aperitif on deck is part of the rhythm of the afternoon, not a rushed add-on squeezed in before you hurry back to the car park.
You meet at the Old Port, step aboard the gozzo, and get a short introduction from the skipper before the lines are cast off. The first stretch follows the waterfront with Bari laid out from the sea: working harbour mood, historic facades, and stretches of coast that stay tucked behind the promenade when you are on foot. From there the route heads toward quieter inlets and coves where the water turns clear and the cliffs feel close enough to touch.
When the Adriatic is calm enough, the boat anchors for a swim. You are welcome to bring snorkelling gear if you want a look below the surface. On the way back, refreshments and a traditional Apulian aperitif are served on deck while the harbour comes back into view. The whole outing lasts about ninety minutes, which is long enough to feel you have been somewhere, without eating up the entire day.
The start is Bari Old Port on Lungomare Imperatore Augusto, in the heart of Puglia's Adriatic capital. From the water you see the historic waterfront, the working harbour, and corners of coast that most visitors only glimpse from the pavement. It is a different angle on a city that rewards anyone willing to leave the main shopping streets for an hour.
This is a Bari start, not a Matera address. If you are staying around the Sassi or elsewhere in inland Basilicata, allow a proper block of driving or train time rather than assuming you can squeeze this in between a morning museum visit and an evening dinner reservation.
No previous boating experience is required. You should be happy on a small open boat and willing to swim when the skipper anchors in calm enough water.
Young children may sit on laps on some departures. Swimming is only possible if sea conditions allow, even when the cruise itself still goes ahead.
A local skipper who knows this coastline runs the gozzo, so you are not hiring a bare boat and a map and hoping for the best. Shared groups stay small enough that the aperitif on deck still feels personal, with room to spread out and watch the city slide past rather than standing in a queue at the rail.
The wooden gozzo is the point of the outing: slow pace, Adriatic air, salt on your arms, and a harbour return that feels like a proper afternoon on the water rather than a quick loop and straight back to the car park.
Meet your skipper at the Old Port on Lungomare Imperatore Augusto and step onto a traditional wooden gozzo. A short introduction covers the layout of the boat and what to expect on the water before lines are cast off.
Cruise along Bari's waterfront with the city skyline from the sea, then thread toward quieter Adriatic inlets and rocky stretches that are hard to reach on foot. The skipper keeps the pace unhurried, in the spirit of a traditional gozzo day.
Anchor in clear water for a swim when conditions are right. Bring snorkelling gear if you want a look below the surface. If the Adriatic is lively, the skipper may keep the boat moving and save swimming for another day.
Enjoy an Apulian aperitif and refreshments on deck as you cruise back to the Old Port. The outing ends at the same quay after about ninety minutes, with the harbour lights and sea breeze still in your clothes.
Meet at 19 Lungomare Imperatore Augusto, 70122 Bari, at the Old Port. Look for the Bari boat tour meeting point on the waterfront, not a random beach outside the city.
There is no hotel pickup. Public transport is noted as nearby, but check times. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early so the skipper can welcome you aboard before departure.
No. The skipper runs the gozzo and handles the lines, the route and the anchoring. You are a guest on deck, not crew for the day.
You should still be comfortable on a small open boat and willing to swim when the sea allows. If open water makes you uneasy, say so when you meet the skipper and they will keep that in mind.
About one and a half hours from the Old Port, including time under way, a possible swim stop, and the aperitif on deck on the return.
It is a harbour outing with coastal views, not a full-day charter to distant beaches. Timing can shift a little with wind and where the boat anchors.
Meet at 19 Lungomare Imperatore Augusto, 70122 Bari, at the Old Port waterfront.
There is no pickup from hotels in Matera or elsewhere. Navigate to the Old Port rather than a suburban beach. Arrive a little early so boarding is calm.
When sea conditions allow, the skipper anchors in clear water for a swim. This is part of the shared experience, included in the outing.
Snorkelling gear is not supplied, but you may bring your own mask. Swimming is only possible if sea conditions allow, even when the cruise itself still goes ahead.
Refreshments and a traditional Apulian aperitif are served on deck during the outing. Think local flavours at a relaxed pace on the water, not a full restaurant meal.
Alcoholic and soft options depend on what is served that day. Let the crew know when you arrive if you have dietary needs.
Shared departures take between two and seven guests, plus the skipper. Solo bookers may need to join an existing slot or choose a private rate.
Private hire uses the same gozzo with your own party. The deck stays comfortable because the shared cap is low.
Child and infant categories appear on some dates, and infants may sit on laps. Let the crew know when you arrive if you are bringing very young children.
Life jackets and seating are arranged on the day. You remain responsible for keeping children safe on an open boat near water.
This is a small-boat outing on open water. Strong wind, thunderstorms or a rough Adriatic can postpone the trip or rule out swimming even if the cruise still goes ahead.
Light cloud is often fine. If the forecast looks doubtful, the crew will be in touch rather than leaving you guessing.
No. The meeting point is Bari Old Port on the Adriatic, a drive from Matera and the Sassi. Plan your own train, car or taxi.
Public transport is nearby in Bari, but check return times if you are not driving. The outing itself starts and ends at the harbour.
Both shared and private options are available when you book. Shared trips fill the gozzo with a small group up to seven guests. Private hire is the same boat and route with your party only.
Prices differ between the two. Pick the rate that matches your group size and whether you want the deck to yourselves.
