Join us for a memorable cycling experience, led by Steve, a fully qualified British Cycling Mountain Leader. You'll traverse historical landscapes, taking in some of the most significant Neolithic sites in the UK. This ride offers a mix of history, challenging climbs, scenic descents, and beautiful views of Wiltshire’s countryside.
This exciting ride begins at the Avebury National Trust Car Park, where we set off from the historic village of Avebury. From here, you'll cycle to Silbury Hill, a mysterious Neolithic mound, followed by a short ride along the A4 with views of West Kennet Long Barrow.
We then pick up the Ridgeway, Europe’s oldest trail, and ascend onto the Marlborough Downs. As we cycle through Overton Down, you’ll pass by the enigmatic Sarsen stones and the Neolithic burial site known as Devil’s Den. The route winds through The Gallops, leading to a descent through the scenic villages of Rockley and Ogbourne Maizey.
Next, we rejoin the Ridgeway near Ogbourne St George, pausing for a break in a peaceful woodland spot, offering a fantastic view over Swindon. The journey continues past Liddington Castle’s ancient earthworks and up to Barbury Castle Country Park, where you can enjoy expansive views from the top. You’ll cycle through Barbury Castle hillfort, offering glimpses into the area's Bronze and Iron Age history.
On the return leg, we’ll stop at Hackpen White Horse, a chalk carving marking Queen Victoria’s coronation. The final leg takes us back towards Avebury, riding through the sacred Avebury Stone Circle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where we’ll stop for photos and reflections on the area’s rich history.
We start and finish at the Avebury National Trust Car Park in Wiltshire. This area is famous for its rich history and natural beauty, including the World Heritage site of Avebury and the Ridgeway Trail.
The beautiful Wiltshire countryside provides an ideal setting for this cycling adventure.
