Experience one of Japan's most dramatic spring sights on a full-day journey along the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route. This seasonal tour runs when the famous snow walls are carved open each spring, taking you from Nagano City to Murodo at 2,450 metres for towering snow corridors, alpine views and free time on the plateau.
Meet in Nagano City and board the tour bus toward the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route. At Ogizawa Station, begin the ascent using a series of mountain transports: tunnel trolley bus, cable car and the Tateyama Ropeway, one of the longest of its kind at 1,700 metres.
En route, pause at Kurobe Dam, Japan's highest dam and a remarkable feat of engineering. Continue upward to Murodo, the highest station on the route at 2,450 metres above sea level, where vast winter snowfall is carved into the iconic snow walls each spring.
Walk through the snow corridor, explore the surrounding snowfields and visit the museum before regrouping for the descent. Return to Nagano City between 18:00 and 19:00. All listed times are estimates and may shift with weather, traffic and peak-season demand.
The Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route crosses the heart of the Japanese Alps in Chubu Sangaku National Park. Rising from the Nagano side at Ogizawa, the route climbs through dam valleys, ropeway stations and high plateaus to Murodo on Mount Tateyama.
The snow walls are a spring-only phenomenon. Heavy winter snow blocks the road until warmer temperatures allow crews to carve a passage through walls that can reach 20 metres high. Outside this window, the corridor is not accessible, which is why this tour runs on a seasonal schedule.
No technical hiking or mountaineering experience is required. The day involves light walking on snow and managed paths at high altitude, with several hours outdoors in changeable mountain weather.
Wear warm layers, waterproof footwear with grip and sun protection. Bring lunch, snacks and water, as food options may be limited at the summit. A reasonable level of fitness helps on a full ten-hour mountain day.

Combining multiple mountain vehicles with free exploration at the summit makes this one of the most accessible ways to reach the snow walls from Nagano without planning each Alpine Route connection yourself.
Choose either Hotel Kokusai 21, meeting at the hotel entrance at 07:50, or JR Nagano Station, meeting in front of the Information Board directly across from the Shinkansen gates at 08:15.
Arrive a few minutes early with warm layers, walking shoes and your food ready. Drop-off returns to Hotel Kokusai 21 followed by Nagano Station between 18:00 and 19:00.
