Short forest loops are the point of this first safari: you share a machine, stop for photos, and learn how a winter trail actually feels. The ride stays close to town, yet the pine and open snow take over quickly once you leave the last streets, which is why it works so well as an introduction.
Collection from a listed hotel or the town office is followed by thermal overalls, boots, mittens and a helmet at the safari house. The guide walks through throttle, brake, spacing and hand signals at an easy pace, then you try the first slow metres in an open yard so stopping feels familiar before the trees close in. Shared machines agree who starts as driver, and there is time for questions before the group leaves the yard.
The route heads onto nearby pine and open snow for about two hours, with pauses to swap who is steering and to take photos at a couple of scenic spots. The line stays together so first-timers are not left guessing on a faster stretch. You then return the kit, warm up at the house, and are taken back to the same pickup point with the rest of the day still ahead.
Pine forest starts almost as soon as you leave the streets of Rovaniemi, so even a short outing puts you among quiet trees and winter light that changes by the hour. The snow here is the real surface under the machines, not a town path dressed up as wilderness.
The trails used on this outing stay near the safari house, which means you get a genuine sense of Lapland without a long transfer into the backcountry. On clear days the sky and snow do most of the talking. On softer weather days the forest still feels still and close, and that is enough for a first taste.
No previous snowmobile experience is needed for this outing. You should be happy to sit on a moving machine in the cold and to follow the briefing on braking, spacing and hand signals so the group can stay readable on the trail.
Younger children can often travel in a sled with a parent or older child rather than riding as the driver. Tell the team ages and heights beforehand so seating can be planned in the yard. Wear your own warm base layers under the provided outer kit, because the stops feel colder once the machines are switched off.
Local guides have been taking guests onto these short loops since 2005, starting slowly and checking that you are happy with the machine before the group stretches out. Stops are for photos and questions, not for rushing the clock, which is how mixed first-timer groups still finish the ride well.
Thermal kit is ready at the house so you can focus on the ride rather than packing specialist gear from home. The route is chosen to give first-timers a clear taste of winter driving without asking for long-distance stamina or a full wilderness day.
Pickup is offered from the hotels and meeting points listed for this safari, including Santa Claus Village, selected Ounasvaara hotels, SantaSport, Postmaster Hotel, and the town office at Pirkkakatu 2. The team confirms your collection point and time so you are not waiting in the wrong lobby.
City-centre stays can also meet at the office on Pirkkakatu. Wear a warm hat and your own thermal layers, because the outer safari kit is fitted when you arrive at the house rather than at the hotel door.
No. This outing is paced for first-time riders. Your guide explains the controls, spacing and how to stop before you leave the yard, and they keep the first stretch easy so you can settle in.
If you have driven before you can still enjoy it. Tell the guide at the briefing if you want a few extra pointers or are happy to take the lead on a shared machine.
Plan for about 3 to 4 hours from pickup to drop-off. Around two of those hours are spent driving the snowmobiles, with the rest used for kit, briefing and the transfer.
Exact timing can shift a little with group size and weather. Your confirmation will show the live start time for your date.
Children are welcome on this shared safari. Younger children often travel in a sled with a parent or an older, responsible child rather than riding as the driver.
Share ages and heights with the team beforehand so seating can be planned. Very small children feel the cold quickly, so extra layers help.
Thermal overalls, boots, wool socks, mittens and a helmet are provided for the drive. You keep your own clothes on underneath.
Bring a warm hat and proper base layers for the temperature on the day. The outer kit handles wind and snow; your layers keep you comfortable at the stops.
Most guests are collected from a listed hotel or meeting point in Rovaniemi. The team confirms the pickup point and time.
City-centre stays can also meet at the office on Pirkkakatu 2. Arrive in your own warm layers; the safari outer kit is fitted at the house.
Two guests usually share one machine and can swap who drives during the outing. A single-driving option may be available as an extra if you want a machine to yourself.
Children who are not driving sit in a sled. The guide sets the order so the group stays together on the trail.
Light snow and cold are normal here and the safari often still runs. The guide may shorten exposed stretches or choose a more sheltered line if the wind picks up.
If conditions are unsafe, the team will be in touch to reschedule. Keep a stay phone number to hand on the day.
This shorter safari does not include a sit-down meal. There is time to kit up and drive, then return.
Eat before pickup if you want something substantial. You can bring a small snack in a pocket if you need it between stops.
Share a phone number you will use in Rovaniemi, the ages of any children, and any allergy or dietary notes. That helps with pickup and seating.
If anyone in the group is uneasy about cold or motion, mention it at the briefing so the guide can place them carefully in the line.
Shared driving is the standard setup. A single-driving supplement is sometimes offered if you want a machine to yourself.
Ask the team before the date if that extra matters to you, so they can confirm whether it is available for your group size.
About the centre
Rovaniemi
We have been sharing winter days around Rovaniemi since 2005, first with local teams and friends and now with travellers who want a real feel of life above the Arctic Circle. The work is still rooted in the same thing: small groups, Lappish hospitality, and time outdoors in the last wilderness of Europe.
Guides here grew up with this landscape. Days are built around snowmobile trails, campfire meals from local kitchens, and the quiet of the forest after the city lights fade. We take you into everyday Arctic life, not a staged version of it, and we look after the places we visit so the next generation can enjoy the same snow, silence, and night sky.
