Cover a wide slice of the Höfn coastline on a guided super jeep route, taking in black sand beaches, an old airport runway and a glacial lagoon in a single afternoon. Wildlife sightings such as seals at the harbour mouth and reindeer inland make every departure a little different.
Throughout the drive, the super jeep moves between several distinct stops rather than following one fixed trail, giving you a broad look at the landscape around Höfn. Expect black sand beach, old ruins, a lighthouse, harbour wildlife and a glacial lagoon, all woven into one relaxed afternoon out with your guide.
Each stop is short enough to keep the pace moving, with just enough time to get out, look around and take photos before continuing to the next. The mix of coastline, history and wildlife means there is always something different to see, rather than one long drive to a single destination.
The tour departs from a meeting point at Smyrlabjörg, near Höfn on Iceland's southeast coast, an area shaped by black sand beaches, fjords and the outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull. The route takes in Suðurfjörur beach, the ruins of an old airport, and Hvanneyjarviti lighthouse before reaching the harbour at Höfn.
From there, the drive continues toward a glacial lagoon fed by either Fláajökull or Heinabergsjökull, depending on access and conditions, where icebergs drift on still water beneath the surrounding mountains. Reindeer are occasionally seen grazing on the flatlands along the way, adding another layer of local wildlife to the route.
No experience or particular fitness is required, since you remain seated in the super jeep for the whole route. The tour suits families and travellers of all ages, with a minimum age of just 2 and a relaxed pace built around photo stops rather than physical activity.
Comfortable, sturdy shoes are useful for the short walks at each stop, some of which cross sand or uneven ground. Warm, windproof layers are worth packing too, since the coast and lagoon can feel considerably breezier than inland.
Guides know the coastline and back roads around Höfn well, choosing the best stops for wildlife and lagoon access on the day. Rather than a single sight, this route strings together several of the area's most distinctive spots into one easy afternoon out.
The mix of beach, ruins, lighthouse, harbour and lagoon means the tour appeals to a wide range of travellers, from wildlife spotters to those simply after varied coastal scenery. A flexible, locally guided route also makes it easier to adapt around the day's weather and wildlife activity.
