Shared machines and a fire meal shape this half day near Rovaniemi. After a safety briefing you ride mainly on the frozen Kemijoki, then switch with the rest of the group so everyone gets both the trail and a proper Arctic BBQ.
Once everyone is kitted up, the guide shows how the snowmobile works and how to stay spaced on the ice. Half the group heads out while the others eat by the fire, then you swap. Two guests usually share a machine and can take turns if they hold a valid licence. Small children can ride in a warm shuttle sleigh pulled by the guide if they are not driving.
You can choose about 45 or 90 minutes on the snowmobile; the whole outing including transfers, briefing, ride, and BBQ still lands around three hours. No previous riding experience is needed. The trail stays mostly on the frozen river, with snowy forest on both banks, and you change out of the outer kit before the van returns you to the same accommodation.
The frozen Kemijoki is the main trail, with snowy forest on both banks. The exact line changes with ice and weather so the guide can keep the group on safe ground.
The base is a short drive from town. You are not walking in; the van takes you to the kit up point and brings you back to the same accommodation at the end.
Prior riding time is not expected. If you want to drive, you need a valid driving licence. Passengers and anyone in the shuttle sleigh do not need a licence.
Dress in warm base and mid layers; outer suits are part of the kit up. Optional damage protection can be added if you prefer a lower liability on the machine. Ask the team before you travel if you are unsure who will drive.
Winter language matching is part of how the team hosts from November through March, when Spanish, French, Italian and other languages may be possible alongside English and Finnish. Briefings stay practical, and the route stays honest about ice.
The day is split so the BBQ is not a rushed afterthought. While one group is on the river, the other is already at the fire, then you change over. Families can stay together because younger children have the sleigh option instead of being left behind at the hotel.
Your guide collects you from accommodation in the Rovaniemi area and drives to the snowmobile base. This is a short transfer, not a sightseeing loop. Keep your thermal layers on so kit-up is quick once you arrive. If two of you plan to share a machine, decide who holds the licence before you step out of the van.
At the base you meet the guides, put on riding kit, and learn how the snowmobile works. The briefing covers spacing, hand signals, and what to do if you stop on the ice. No one needs prior experience, but everyone needs to listen. Children heading for the shuttle sleigh get their own explanation so they know what the pull will feel like.
One group heads out along the frozen Kemijoki while the other stays at the fire for the Arctic BBQ. After the ride you swap, so nobody misses the meal or the trail. You can choose a shorter or longer time on the machine; the whole outing still lands around three hours. Two guests share a snowmobile and can take turns if both are licensed.
When both groups have ridden and eaten, you change out of the outer kit and drive back to the same address. The day is active but not a full wilderness expedition, so most guests are ready for a quiet afternoon in town. Keep a dry layer handy for the van. The team can talk through photos or a later date if you want more time on the ice.
You will be collected from your accommodation in the Rovaniemi area and driven to the snowmobile base. The team will confirm the pickup window the day before.
Wear thermal layers to the van; the outer riding kit is put on at the base. If you are staying outside the usual pickup zone, write to the team before you travel.
No. The guide explains the controls and the safety rules before anyone starts the engines. First-time riders are expected.
The trail is chosen for a first outing, not a race. Listen to the briefing and stay in line with the group.
Only if you want to drive. Passengers and children in the shuttle sleigh do not need a licence.
Two guests usually share one snowmobile and can swap the driving seat when both are licensed. Bring the physical licence with you.
You can choose a ride of about 45 minutes or about 90 minutes. The whole outing, including transfers, briefing, BBQ, and the return, is around three hours either way.
While one group is on the river, the other is at the fire, then you switch. That is how everyone gets both parts of the day without being hurried.
Yes. Younger children can sit in a warm shuttle sleigh pulled by the guide's snowmobile, so the family stays together.
Older children who meet the driving rules can ride as passengers or, if licensed, take a turn to drive. Ask the team about your child's age before you travel.
Most of the trail is on the frozen Kemijoki, with forest on either side. It is close to Rovaniemi but feels open once you leave the base.
The exact line changes with ice and weather. The guide will not take the group onto doubtful surface.
It is a fire meal at the base while the other half of the group is out on the river. You eat, warm up, and then swap so the riders get their turn at the fire.
Tell the team about vegetarian or other dietary needs before you travel so they can plan the plates.
Wear warm base and mid layers, plus proper socks. Outer riding suits and helmets are part of the kit up at the base.
Bring gloves you like if you have them. You will be outside for the briefing and the BBQ as well as the ride.
There is a standard liability if a machine is damaged. Optional damage protection can be added if you want that liability reduced.
Ask the team about the protection option before you travel. Do not assume it is already included.
English and Finnish run through the season. From November to March, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Turkish, Greek, Czech, or Slovak may be possible when a guide is free.
A specific language is not guaranteed. Tell the team your preference and they will do their best.
Snowmobiling here depends on weather, snow, and ice. The guide can change the route to keep the group safe.
If a date cannot run, the team will be in touch. Dress as if you will still be outside for the briefing and the fire even when the trail is shortened.

About the centre
Rovaniemi
We are a local team based in Rovaniemi, sharing Finnish Lapland with small groups. Most days run with no more than eight guests, so the pace stays relaxed and there is room to stop for the things that make a trip feel personal. The team includes lifelong locals and international guides who have made Lapland their home, and from October through March we do our best to match you with a guide who speaks your language when availability allows.
Every outing is designed by people who know these forests, frozen rivers, and night skies well. You will find Northern Lights hunts, national park walks, ice fishing, husky farm visits, and snowmobile days that stay off the busiest tourist loops. We work with trusted local partners and keep the focus on genuine hospitality, so you leave with a clearer sense of the real Lapland, not just a checklist of sights.
