A short boat ride from the north-east coast of Zanzibar leads out to the clear waters around Mnemba Atoll, one of the island's best known snorkelling spots. Guests spend the morning drifting over coral gardens thick with tropical fish, with a chance of spotting dolphins on the crossing and fresh fruit served on board.
After an early hotel pickup, the journey heads to the departure point around Matemwe on Zanzibar's north-east coast, where a traditional wooden boat is waiting. From there it is a short crossing of around twenty to thirty minutes out to the edge of Mnemba Atoll, a protected reef system known for some of the clearest water on the island.
Once anchored, guests spend time snorkelling over the coral gardens, with a guide on hand to point out fish and help less confident swimmers feel comfortable in the water. Fresh fruit and drinks are served on board between swims, and there is always a chance of spotting dolphins on the way out or back.
Mnemba Atoll sits just off Zanzibar's north-east coast, a small sandy island ringed by one of the healthiest reef systems in the region. The protected waters around it are known for exceptional visibility, which is why it draws snorkellers and divers from across the island rather than only those staying nearby.
The departure point along the north-east coast, around Matemwe, is itself a quieter stretch of shoreline lined with fishing villages and low key beach lodges. The short boat crossing gives a good sense of the coastline before reaching the more open water around the atoll, making the journey out part of the experience rather than just a means of getting there.
No previous snorkelling experience is necessary to join this trip, as the guide is on hand throughout to help anyone who is new to it. Being reasonably comfortable in the water is useful, but confident swimming ability is not required thanks to the life jackets provided.
Anyone who tends to feel the cold may want a rash vest or light wetsuit top, since time spent floating on the surface can feel cooler than expected even in a warm climate. It is also worth practising breathing through a snorkel in a pool beforehand if this is your first time, just to feel more at ease once in open water.
Mnemba's reef is protected as a conservation area, which has helped keep the coral and fish life in noticeably better condition than many more heavily visited sites nearby. Choosing a trip that respects this, with a guide who understands the reef and its currents, makes a real difference to what you see beneath the surface.
Splitting the morning into a boat crossing, guided snorkelling and time to rest with fresh fruit on board keeps the pace relaxed rather than rushed. It is a trip built around giving guests proper time in the water rather than a quick look before heading straight back to shore.
