This private two-day expedition links Dushanbe or the Zeravshan valley with the Shing River gorge, where seven cascading lakes sit between 1,640 and 2,400 metres in the Fan Mountains. Day one is a scenic road journey through the Varzob Valley and Hissar Range, cultural stops at ancient Sarazm and Penjikent, then your first encounters with the lower lakes before a hostel overnight. Day two is a full hiking day along the lake chain to Nofin, Khurdak and Marguzor, the largest and most celebrated of the seven, before the return drive.
The pace suits fit hikers who want a compact taste of Tajikistan's high country without a long expedition. Road transfers, guiding, and one night in simple hostel accommodation are included, with clear timings each day so you know when pickups, walks and meals fall.
Local guides know the Fan Mountains roads, trail conditions and seasonal access to the Seven Lakes, which matters on a route that mixes long transfers with sustained walking at altitude. Private departure dates and flexible pickup from Dushanbe, Penjikent or Samarkand let you join the trip from the capital or the Zeravshan/Samarkand corridor without backtracking.
The itinerary balances culture and scenery: Sarazm and Penjikent on day one, then two days focused on the lake chain that defines this corner of Tajikistan. Simple hostel accommodation keeps you close to the trails while keeping the trip manageable for travellers with limited time.
Your guide collects you at 08:00 from Dushanbe or at 11:00 from Penjikent/Samarkand, usually from your hotel. The day begins with a road journey toward the Fan Mountains and the Shing River gorge, with lunch taken on the way or in Penjikent depending on timing and group preference.
For roughly three to four hours you follow the Varzob Valley and Hissar mountains beside the Varzob River, entering the celebrated Fan range. The area around Iskanderkul is considered the heart of the Fans, ringed by peaks above 5,000 metres including Chimtarga at 5,487 metres, with about a hundred summits in the massif.
On arrival near Penjikent you visit Sarazm, Tajikistan's first UNESCO World Heritage monument and one of Central Asia's oldest settlements, dating from the fourth to second millennium BC. Excavations revealed palace and religious buildings, metal and stone craft, and jewellery made from precious stones and processed seashells on the Zeravshan River bank.
In Penjikent you walk Central Avenue, explore the bazaar and visit the Rudaki Museum area linked to Abuabdullo Rudaki, founder of Persian-Tajik literature in the ninth and tenth centuries. The city sits at about 900 metres in the Zarafshan valley east of Samarkand, with river-side recreation and Silk Road heritage throughout the centre.
Afternoon time permitting, you reach the first three of the Seven Lakes. Mizhgon, the lowest at 1,640 metres, takes its name from the Tajik word for eyelashes. Soy means shadow, sitting between high rocks, and Khushor lies 400 metres further on, linked to Soy by a turbulent stream you can see from the path.
Around 19:00 you check in to a hostel in the Seven Lakes area and sit down to dinner after a full day on the road and trails. This overnight stay positions you for an early start on the upper lakes the following morning without another long transfer from Dushanbe or the valley cities.
Breakfast is served at the hostel from 07:00, then at 08:00 you begin a tour hike toward Nofin, the fourth lake. Although Khushor and Nofin are only 400 metres apart as the crow flies, the serpentine path covers about a kilometre, and Nofin itself is long and narrow, stretching more than 2.5 km with a width of roughly 200 metres.
Around midday you break for lunch on the shore of Nofin, with time to rest and take in the elongated lake basin before continuing uphill. This pause helps on a day that combines several linked hikes before the return journey to Dushanbe or Samarkand.
From Nofin you tour-hike to Khurdak, the smallest lake whose name translates as baby, covering only about 0.025 sq km at 1,870 metres. The walk is roughly 1.5 km and passes the village of Padrut along the way, giving a glimpse of local life above the gorge.
The largest and most celebrated lake in the system, Marguzor, sits at about 2,140 metres after more than 2 km of serpentine road or trail. Vehicle support may be used on some sections to save time. From mid afternoon you begin the way back, ending the tour with a return transfer to Dushanbe or Samarkand as arranged on booking.
Pickup is from your hotel in Dushanbe at 08:00, or from Penjikent or Samarkand at 11:00, depending on your travel plans. Confirm your preferred city and accommodation when booking so the driver and guide can plan the route into the Fan Mountains.
At the end of day two you return to Dushanbe or Samarkand as arranged. You need to reach your chosen pickup city before the tour starts; transport from other locations is not included unless agreed in advance.
Your included overnight is in a hostel in the Seven Lakes area, booked for night one after visiting the lower lakes and checking in around 19:00. This is simple mountain accommodation aimed at walkers rather than resort comfort, placing you on the doorstep of the upper lake trails for an early start on day two. Dinner on arrival and breakfast before the day-two hike are taken at the hostel according to the published schedule.
Expect shared or basic private rooms typical of regional hostels, with limited facilities compared to city hotels. Bring a head torch, personal toiletries and a warm layer for cooler evenings at altitude. Exact property name and room type can vary by season; the operator confirms the hostel arrangement when your date is secured through the booking system.
