Join a guided canyoning session through Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park on São Miguel in the Azores. Under local guide coaching you will rappel, slide and jump into clear pools on an easy route suited to active families and first-timers.
You meet your guides near the park entrance for a welcome, booking check and full safety briefing. Kit is fitted on site, then the group moves into the canyon for a paced sequence of short rappels, natural slides and optional jumps into pools, with coaching at each step.
The route is graded easy and stays focused on fun movement through water and rock rather than advanced technical climbing. Guides manage the pace so beginners and families can enjoy the features without rushing.
Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park sits on the north-east of São Miguel, where streams cut through lush volcanic valleys. The canyon setting mixes forest shade, open rock and clear water, which makes it a strong introduction to canyoning in the Azores.
The meeting point is on Estrada Regional Achada in Achada (postcode 9630-028), close to the park access. Allow time for the drive from other parts of the island, as there is no transfer included.
No prior canyoning experience is needed. You should be able to follow guide instructions, walk on uneven wet ground, and feel comfortable getting fully wet in outdoor water.
The minimum age is 6. A basic level of fitness helps, and anyone with medical concerns should check suitability before booking. Bring swimwear and a towel as listed in what to bring.
Sessions are led by local guides who know this canyon and focus on clear briefings, careful kit checks and steady coaching through each feature. Group sizes stay capped so people get attention without feeling lost in a crowd.
All necessary canyoning equipment is included, so you can arrive ready to go with just swimwear and a towel. The easy grading makes this a practical first canyon day for families and groups of friends visiting São Miguel.
Arrive at the Achada meeting point near Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões. Guides welcome the group, confirm bookings, and issue all necessary canyoning equipment with a careful fit check.
A full safety briefing covers how to move in the canyon, how rappels and jumps are managed, and what to expect from water levels on the day. Once everyone is ready, the group walks into the canyon start.
Inside the canyon you move through a mix of short rappels on ropes, natural rock slides and jumps into clear pools. Guides set up each feature, demonstrate technique, and coach participants one by one.
The route is graded easy, so features are chosen for first-timers and active families. Optional lower lines are used when someone prefers not to take a higher jump, subject to conditions.
After the final features, the group exits the canyon, removes kit, and packs up. Guides do a final check that everyone is accounted for and answer any questions about the day.
Use your towel and dry clothes before travelling on. Allow a little buffer after the stated 2 hours 30 minutes if the group took longer at busy features.
Participants need to be at least 6 years old. The route is graded easy and is aimed at active families as well as first-time canyoners.
Children must be comfortable following guide instructions in a wet outdoor setting. If you are unsure whether a younger child is ready, message via Adventuro Chat before you book.
No previous canyoning experience is required. Guides give a clear safety briefing and fit everyone with the right kit before you start moving through the canyon.
You should be happy to walk on uneven ground, get wet, and try short rappels, slides and jumps with coaching. Progress is paced to the group so beginners can take part comfortably.
All necessary canyoning equipment is included. Guides issue the technical kit you need for the session and check it is fitted correctly before you enter the canyon.
You still need to bring your own swimwear to wear under the wetsuit, plus a towel for after the activity. Sturdy closed footwear that can get wet is also recommended unless told otherwise on the day.
Plan for around 2 hours and 30 minutes in total. That covers meeting your guides, the safety briefing, kit-up, and time in the canyon.
Exact timing can vary slightly with group size, water levels and how long people need at each feature. Arrive a little early so the briefing can start on time.
The main meeting point is Estrada Regional Achada, 011, Achada, 9630-028, near Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões on São Miguel.
Full directions and any day-of notes come with your booking confirmation. There is no pick-up or drop-off service, so please arrange your own travel to the meeting point.

Customer cancellations less than 48 hours before the activity are non-refundable. Free cancellation applies when you cancel at least 48 hours ahead. No-shows are non-refundable.
Bring swimwear to wear under the wetsuit and a towel for afterwards. Closed shoes that can get wet are useful, along with a change of clothes for the journey home.
At booking you will also be asked for each participant's full name, height, weight and shoe size so kit can be prepared. Leave valuables somewhere dry if you can.
Groups are kept to a maximum of 9 participants so guides can give clear instruction and keep an eye on everyone in the canyon.
Smaller groups are common and still run. Solo travellers and couples are welcome, subject to availability on the date you choose.
