This two-day course gives you the chance to take the helm and get hands-on with high-speed handling, manoeuvring, and man overboard recovery. You’ll build confidence in boat handling and navigation while learning essential safety and operational skills. It’s the qualification you need to hire a powerboat, head abroad, or work toward becoming an RYA instructor. By the end, you’ll feel ready to take on a range of boating challenges with confidence.
You’ll start by learning how to launch and recover your boat safely, making sure you’re comfortable getting out on the water. From there, you’ll practice manoeuvring at both low and high speeds, gradually building control and awareness in a variety of conditions.
Man overboard drills are an important part of the course—you’ll learn how to respond quickly and safely in emergency situations. You’ll also practise picking up moorings, navigating tides, and following collision regulations, all under the guidance of qualified instructors. Training takes place on both inland and coastal waters, giving you realistic scenarios to prepare for independent boating.
By the end of the course, you’ll receive your RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling certificate, recognised internationally and forming the foundation for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).
Eastbourne provides a combination of inland and coastal waters, offering varied conditions that help you develop and test your boating skills. Sheltered areas and open waters create the perfect environment to learn and practise confidently.
Local facilities make training straightforward, with easy access to launch points, equipment storage, and safety infrastructure. This allows instructors to deliver structured, hands-on training while you focus on improving your skills and enjoying the experience.
No previous experience is required, though completing the RYA Level 1 Start Powerboating course can give you a head start and help you feel even more confident on the water.
You should be in good health and comfortable in the water. A reasonable level of fitness is useful for the practical exercises, and you should be prepared to spend time outdoors in all weather conditions.
Training is engaging and supportive, with instructors who adapt guidance to your individual needs. You’ll get the help and advice you need while building the confidence to operate a boat safely on your own.
As a non-profit run by East Sussex County Council, courses are designed to be accessible to everyone—from individuals and families to schools and community groups. Accredited training in beautiful East Sussex locations encourages you to develop practical skills, safety awareness, and a love for boating in a welcoming environment.
