Discover the Alcantara River on an easy guided river trek through one of Sicily's most striking natural landscapes. With specialist boots and a professional guide, you walk in the shallow water and along the riverbed, taking in basalt walls, clear pools, and the quiet of the gorge. Suitable for families and first-timers, this is a relaxed way to experience the Alcantara Gorges without needing prior trekking experience.
Arrive at the meeting point in good time so the team can get everyone checked in, sized for equipment, and briefed before you head to the river. Your guide fits you with a wetsuit and helmet, explains how the session works, and answers any questions. The pace is unhurried and suited to mixed groups, including children from age six.
Once you enter the Alcantara, you follow an easy river trekking route through shallow water and along the rocky riverbed. Specialist boots keep you steady as you splash through clear pools and pass between dramatic basalt formations carved by lava and water over thousands of years. Your guide points out features in the gorge and keeps the group together throughout.
The walk stays at an accessible level with no technical climbing or scrambling required. You have time to pause, take in the surroundings, and enjoy the cooler air inside the canyon. When the route is complete, you return to the base area where you can change out of your wetsuit and collect any belongings stored securely during the activity.
The experience takes place in the Alcantara Gorges, in the Castiglione di Sicilia area of eastern Sicily. The river cuts through volcanic basalt, creating narrow walls, smooth rock channels, and emerald pools that feel worlds away from the busy coastal resorts. It is one of the island's best-known natural sights and a rewarding stop if you are exploring Mount Etna, Taormina, or the north-east coast.
The meeting point is just off the main road at Contrada Larderia near Motta Camastra, with secure parking on site. From here you are a short transfer or walk to the river entry point used for the trek. The setting combines easy access with an immediate sense of being deep inside a wild river canyon.
No prior trekking or river walking experience is needed. The route is graded easy and the team provides wetsuits, helmets, and suitable boots so you can focus on enjoying the gorge. You should be comfortable standing and walking on uneven, wet surfaces for around an hour, and able to follow your guide's instructions in the water.
Participants must be at least 6 years old, at least 125 cm tall, and within the 120 kg weight limit for safety equipment. Children are welcome when accompanied by a responsible adult. If anyone in your group has concerns about mobility, height, or weight limits, contact the team before you book so they can advise.
Local river guides lead every session, with equipment provided on site so you do not need to bring specialist kit. The route is designed for all ages and kept to small groups, which means clearer briefings, a steadier pace, and more time to enjoy the basalt canyon without feeling rushed.
From secure parking and free storage for personal items to entrance access included in your ticket, the practical details are handled before you step into the water. Italian and English support throughout makes the experience straightforward for visiting families and international travellers alike.
The meeting point is Off ride at Contrada Larderia, Motta Camastra, 98030, in the Castiglione di Sicilia area of eastern Sicily. Look for the signposted meeting area just off the main road; secure parking is available on site for participants.
If you are driving from Taormina or Catania, allow extra time for mountain roads and aim to arrive well before your communicated start time, as the activity begins 30 minutes after that time. Public transport serves the wider area, but a taxi or hire car is the most practical way to reach the meeting point on the day.
