Ridomo Gorge cuts deep into the heart of Mount Taygetos just outside Kalamata, its limestone walls narrowing in one section to barely two metres wide while towering sixty metres overhead. This half day hike descends from the rim near Vorio to the gorge floor before scrambling upstream through boulders and narrow corridors, deep into one of the most dramatic natural features in the Peloponnese.
The hike begins near the village of Vorio, high on the rim of the gorge, where the guide runs through a safety briefing before the group descends a clear path down to the rocky floor below. As the walls of the gorge rise up on either side, the temperature noticeably drops and the noise of the outside world fades away, giving a first proper sense of the scale of Ridomo.
After around five kilometres, the boulder field gives way to a section where the gorge narrows dramatically, with sheer walls closing in to barely two metres apart while rising sixty metres overhead. The group takes time here to properly take in one of the most impressive natural features in the region before heading back to the starting point, with the full round trip typically taking around four hours.
Ridomo Gorge lies just ten kilometres from Kalamata, cutting through the heart of the Taygetos massif from the high peaks down to the beach at Santova on the coast. Its limestone walls and boulder strewn floor were shaped entirely by water draining off the mountain, creating one of the most dramatic and least visited gorges in the Peloponnese.
Being so close to Kalamata, the gorge makes an easy addition to a stay in the city, with the coast and Santova beach only a short distance away for those who fancy a swim afterwards. The wider Taygetos range surrounding the gorge offers dense forest, wild goat populations and a genuine sense of being far from anywhere, despite the short drive back to the city.
This hike involves scrambling over large boulders on the gorge floor, so a reasonable level of fitness, balance and confidence on uneven rock is needed. It is not suitable for complete beginners to hiking, and anyone unsure of their ability to scramble over rough terrain for a few hours should discuss the route with the team before booking.
Sturdy footwear with a good grip is essential given the loose and uneven ground underfoot, and hands are often needed for balance on the boulders. Children are welcome from the age of twelve provided they are confident on rough terrain, and anyone with joint, balance or heart conditions should check the route is suitable before booking.
Guides on this route know exactly where to place each step through the boulder field and the narrow corridor, turning what could be a daunting scramble into a genuinely enjoyable challenge. Pacing takes the terrain seriously, with time built in to properly appreciate the gorge's scale rather than rushing through it.
Reaching the narrow corridor at the heart of Ridomo, with its towering walls and echoing acoustics, is an experience that is hard to match elsewhere in the region. Small group sizes mean the guide can give proper attention to anyone less confident on the boulders, without holding back the rest of the group.
