A morning transfer from the city drops you at Aquila Private Game Reserve for a guided quad ride across open Karoo ground. Rangers lead the group in search of lion, elephant, giraffe and plains game, with meals and a short conservation tour wrapped around the 1 to 2 hour ride.
Rangers meet you after breakfast, talk through the controls and how the convoy stays together, then you kit up with a helmet and follow them onto the tracks. The ride lasts about 1 to 2 hours across the 10,000-hectare reserve, with pauses when animals are close enough to watch from the quads. Expect dust, uneven ground and wide views rather than a high-speed circuit, and stay with the group while first-timers settle into the pace.
After the ride you sit down to a buffet lunch, join the complimentary Eco Synergy tour to hear how the reserve works, then use free time by the infinity pool before the late-afternoon transfer back to Cape Town. Welcome drinks and breakfast start the day on arrival, so the ride sits in the middle of a full reserve visit rather than as a standalone loop.
The Karoo around Aquila is dry, open country of scrub, hills and wide skies, about two hours inland from Cape Town. The private reserve covers a large area where Big Five and plains game move between water and grazing, so the ride feels remote once you leave the city road.
Being close enough for a day trip makes this a practical first taste of a wildlife reserve without an overnight stay. Tracks cross open ground rather than thick bush, which keeps sightlines long and the riding straightforward for mixed groups.
First-time riders are welcome. You should be comfortable following a short briefing, wearing a helmet and riding on uneven, dusty ground while staying with the group. No prior quad experience is needed.
Share any medical conditions or concerns before you travel so the team can advise honestly. The ride is paced for mixed groups, and you stay with experienced rangers throughout.
Membership of the Africa Tourism Association and SATSA sits behind the planning, with a small-team approach that grew from short outings near Cape Town and Johannesburg into reserve days like this. Transfers, meals and the conservation tour are built into the day so you are not stitching a reserve visit together yourself.
Rangers brief the group and keep the convoy together on routes matched to conditions. Support stays practical from first pickup to drop-off in the city, with guides who work in English, Spanish and French when that helps the group.
You are collected from your Cape Town hotel or agreed point and settle in for the scenic drive inland. City streets give way to open farmland and then the drier Karoo hills as you approach the reserve.
Use the journey to charge your phone, apply sunscreen and leave loose items packed away. On arrival you step out for welcome drinks and a buffet breakfast before meeting the rangers.
After a clear briefing on controls, spacing and how the group stays together, you kit up and follow the rangers onto the tracks. The ride lasts about 1 to 2 hours across a large private reserve, with pauses for wildlife and photos.
Expect dust, uneven ground and open views. First-timers stay close to the guide while the pace stays controlled for the group. Lions, elephants, giraffes and other animals may appear along the route, though sightings always depend on the day.
Back at the lodge you sit down to a buffet lunch, then join the complimentary Eco Synergy tour to hear how the reserve works and what conservation looks like on the ground.
Free time by the infinity pool follows before you board the late-afternoon transfer back to Cape Town. Drop-off is at your hotel or agreed city point.
Hotel pickup in Cape Town starts the day. The team confirms a collection time from your hotel or agreed city point and transfers you to Aquila Private Game Reserve in the Karoo.
Wear closed shoes and keep your phone to hand in case traffic shifts the window. At the end of the day you are dropped back in Cape Town. If you are staying outside the usual pickup area, ask the team so they can confirm a meeting point.
You are collected from your hotel or an agreed point in Cape Town. The team confirms the pickup time once your date is set.
If your stay sits outside the usual city pickup area, ask the team so they can confirm a meeting point instead of a hotel collection.
No. A short briefing covers the controls and how the group will stay together. Rangers set a pace that suits mixed groups, including first-timers.
If you have never ridden a powered off-road vehicle, say so. The team will keep the first section simple and stay close while you settle in.
Plan for a full day away from Cape Town, including the two-hour drive each way, breakfast, the 1 to 2 hour ride, lunch, the conservation tour and pool time.
Exact timing depends on traffic and the group. The late-afternoon return usually drops you back in the city before evening.
The reserve is home to Big Five and plains game. Guests often look for lion, elephant, giraffe and other animals on the ride, though nothing is guaranteed.
Rangers know the ground and pause when animals are close enough to watch safely from the quads.
Wear closed shoes, a sun hat and comfortable clothes you do not mind getting dusty. Sunscreen and sunglasses help on open tracks.
A light layer is useful for the morning transfer. Bring a reusable bottle if you have one. The team can answer practical kit questions before you travel.
Yes. Round-trip transfers from Cape Town hotels or an agreed city point are included, along with breakfast, the guided ride, lunch and the conservation tour.
Flights to Cape Town, personal insurance, extra drinks and tips are left to you.
There is no published minimum age for this day. Share ages in your group when you enquire so the team can confirm who can ride and how the group will be looked after.
Children should be comfortable wearing a helmet and sitting securely for the ride under adult supervision.
Groups can start from one guest, with a maximum of six on this product. That keeps the convoy small enough for the rangers to manage on the tracks.
Tell the team if you want to ride together as a private party so they can plan the day.
If heavy rain, strong wind or unsafe track conditions develop, the team may reschedule or adjust the plan for safety. They will be in touch as soon as decisions are clear.
Light cloud or cooler temperatures often still allow a good ride with route changes.
Personal travel insurance is not included and is strongly recommended, covering powered off-road activities and any medical care you might need away from home.
Check that your policy covers quad biking. The team can answer practical questions about the day but cannot provide insurance advice.
