Learn to water ski on the flat, sheltered waters of Bentota with a private 20-minute session suitable for beginners and confident riders alike. With professional coaching and controlled towing speeds, this experience focuses on balance, technique and safe progression on open water.
Your session begins with an onshore briefing covering equipment setup, correct stance and hand positioning on the tow rope. Instructors demonstrate the deep-water start technique, explaining how to keep your knees bent and weight centred as the boat accelerates. Safety procedures and hand signals used during towing are clearly explained.
Once in the water, you’ll begin with controlled towing speeds designed for beginners. The aim is to achieve a stable standing position before gradually increasing speed if appropriate. Instructors monitor your posture and balance from the boat, providing feedback between attempts to refine your technique.
During the 20-minute session, you’ll have multiple starts and riding attempts depending on progress. Beginners focus on standing and maintaining a straight-line glide, while more confident participants may practise gentle edging and small directional adjustments. The lagoon’s relatively calm surface makes it ideal for controlled learning.
Bentota is located on Sri Lanka’s south-western coast and is known for its broad lagoon and protected waterways. The absence of heavy surf and large obstacles creates a suitable environment for boat-towed water sports.
The lagoon’s flat water conditions provide consistency, helping beginners focus on balance rather than battling waves. Access is via Gagabada Road in the Bentota and Aluthgama area. Public transport is limited directly to the launch site, so private transport or taxi is recommended.
Participants must be at least 8 years old and confident in water. No prior water skiing experience is required, but you should be comfortable holding a tow rope and following instructions.
This activity is not recommended for pregnant travellers or individuals with back or heart conditions due to towing forces and surface impact. A reasonable level of upper body strength and balance is helpful.
Sessions are delivered with a strong emphasis on structured coaching and controlled towing speeds. Clear communication signals and boat positioning are used to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for beginners.
Operations are managed with attention to safety standards and responsible water use. Equipment is maintained regularly, and group sizes are kept private to maximise instruction time while respecting the surrounding lagoon environment.
