Climb real glacier ice on a privately guided experience designed to give you space, time and focused instruction in a constantly changing environment. This tour combines glacier travel with hands-on ice climbing on one of Iceland’s most accessible outlet glaciers.
The experience starts with a steady walk towards Sólheimajökull, giving you time to take in the scale of the glacier before stepping onto the ice. Once kitted out, your guide delivers a clear and practical introduction to glacier safety, movement and the use of ice climbing equipment. This briefing sets the foundation for the rest of the day and is paced to suit your experience level.
After stepping onto the glacier, the route moves through crevassed terrain, sculpted ice formations and ridges shaped by meltwater and pressure. Conditions change daily, so your guide selects the safest and most suitable areas for climbing on the day. Time is taken to practise technique, build confidence and try different climbing approaches in a controlled setting.
A significant portion of the tour is spent actively climbing, with guidance throughout and plenty of opportunity to rest, observe and take photos. The private format allows the pace, difficulty and focus to be adjusted, whether this is your first time ice climbing or you already have experience and want to refine technique.
Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, located on Iceland’s south coast. The glacier is known for its visible retreat, dramatic crevasses and constantly shifting ice features, making it an ideal environment for technical glacier activities.
The meeting point is at the Sólheimajökull parking area on Road 221. This location provides direct access to the glacier tongue, minimising approach time and maximising time spent on the ice.
No previous ice climbing experience is required, but participants must be comfortable with physical activity on uneven, icy terrain. This tour is rated Challenging due to the technical nature of ice climbing and time spent on the glacier.
Participants should be in good physical condition and prepared for cold, changeable weather. Proper clothing and sturdy footwear suitable for crampons are essential.
Ice climbing on a moving glacier requires careful judgement and route selection. The private format allows guides to choose quieter areas and adapt plans based on real-time ice conditions rather than fixed routes.
Guides are highly experienced in glacier travel and ice assessment, many with Search and Rescue backgrounds. Their local knowledge supports a calm, structured approach that balances safety with meaningful time spent climbing.
