Taking on ice walls with dedicated guidance, this private session is built around learning and progression on Sólheimajökull. You’ll move from basic techniques into real climbs, with time to practise and improve throughout. It’s a focused experience that gives you space to build confidence on the ice.
Arriving at Sólheimajökull, you’ll meet your guide before getting equipped with crampons, harness, helmet, and ice axe. A short briefing covers safety and the plan for the session before setting off across rocky ground towards the glacier. The approach takes around 20–30 minutes and gives you time to adjust before stepping onto the ice.
Once on the glacier, you’ll begin with a short introduction to movement and technique. This includes how to walk securely using crampons and the basics of front pointing, which is key for climbing. Starting on smaller ice walls, you’ll practise positioning and build confidence while your guide supports you throughout each attempt.
As the session continues, you’ll move on to steeper and more technical climbs depending on your ability and comfort level. Your guide manages the ropes and setup, allowing you to focus on climbing safely. Between attempts, there’s time to rest and review technique, with photos captured during key moments before heading back across the glacier to finish.
Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier extending from the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap on Iceland’s south coast. Known for its accessible ice formations, it provides a varied environment for both hiking and climbing activities.
Located around two and a half hours from Reykjavík, the glacier is reachable as a day trip. Parking and basic facilities are available at the meeting point, but once on the glacier there are no services, so arriving prepared is important.
No previous ice climbing experience is required, as the session is tailored to your level. A moderate level of fitness is recommended, as you’ll be hiking on uneven terrain and using both upper and lower body during climbs.
Participants should be comfortable with heights and able to follow safety instructions throughout. Warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear are essential for staying comfortable on the glacier.
With a private format, Mike, Ryan, and the team can tailor the session entirely to your pace and ability. Their approach focuses on building confidence step by step, giving you time to practise without feeling rushed.
Professional photography is included throughout, allowing you to focus on climbing while key moments are captured. The combination of instruction and flexibility makes it a more personalised way to experience ice climbing.

Ice climbing involves both strength and technique, but efficient movement reduces the effort needed. Footwork plays a key role in supporting your weight.
You can take breaks between climbs, and there is no pressure to complete every route if you feel tired.
You’ll use crampons for grip on the ice and ice axes to help pull yourself upward. A harness and rope system keep you secure at all times.
Your guide will set everything up and explain how each piece of equipment works before you begin.
Yes, the guide will introduce different ice walls depending on your progress. This can include easier slopes as well as steeper vertical sections.
Each route is chosen to match your ability, allowing you to improve steadily during the session.
It’s normal to feel unsure at first, especially if you haven’t climbed before. Starting on smaller walls helps build confidence gradually.
You are always secured to the rope, and the guide is there to support you at every stage of the climb.
