Switching from road travel to air gives a wider view of Costa Rica’s volcanic terrain, combining Poás Volcano with surrounding landscapes in a single private flight. This experience offers a quieter, steady alternative to helicopter travel while still covering a large area.
Pickup from San Jose takes you to a nearby airstrip where the aircraft and pilot are prepared for departure. After a short safety briefing, you’ll board a Cessna 206, a fixed-wing aircraft known for stable scenic flights. Once in the air, the route begins over the Central Valley, offering views of towns, farmland and surrounding mountains before reaching the volcanic region.
As the aircraft approaches Poás Volcano, the landscape shifts to dense rainforest and volcanic terrain. The flight path allows you to observe the crater from above, including its wide formation and geothermal features such as fumaroles and mineral deposits. The route may also include views of nearby volcanic areas such as Irazú, depending on conditions. Throughout the flight, the pilot provides commentary while background audio enhances the experience before returning to San Jose.
The flight takes place across Costa Rica’s Central Valley and Central Volcanic Range, an area defined by active and dormant volcanoes, fertile farmland and mountain ridges. This region forms the geographical centre of the country.
Poás Volcano sits within a protected national park and is known for its large crater and surrounding rainforest. Nearby areas include Alajuela province, where a mix of agriculture and natural reserves create a varied landscape visible from the air.
No previous flight experience is required to take part in this tour. A safety briefing is provided before boarding, and guidance is given by the pilot throughout.
Participants should be comfortable flying in a small aircraft at moderate altitude. Basic mobility is required for entering and exiting the plane safely.
Flights are operated by experienced pilots who combine navigation with informative commentary, helping you understand the landscapes below rather than simply viewing them. Each route is designed to highlight key volcanic and geographic features within a limited timeframe.
Strong emphasis is placed on safety, service quality and responsible tourism practices. By working within regulated airspace and protected regions, the experience supports sustainable travel while delivering a well-structured aerial tour.
