Ancient streets, a crater path and a vineyard lunch on the same volcano slopes make this a full day of history, geology and Campanian flavour. Licensed guides lead you through Pompeii, up towards the crater of Mount Vesuvius, and into a winery for lunch and wine, from the first step inside the ruins to the last glass.
Morning inside the Pompeii archaeological park brings Roman streets, frescoes, villas and shops to life. Paving stones that citizens walked before the eruption of AD 79, stories of daily life in the city, and temples, homes and workshops preserved under volcanic ash fill the guided walk.
Midday brings a transfer to Vesuvius National Park and a guided hike towards the crater rim. The path is well marked but includes uphill sections on volcanic scree, with panoramic views over Naples, the bay and the Pompeii plain opening up as you climb.
A winery on the volcano slopes closes the afternoon with lunch, local wine and grapes grown in mineral-rich soil. Transfers between Pompeii, Vesuvius and the winery are included once the day starts, so you move between sites without arranging separate transport.
In the shadow of Vesuvius, Pompei holds one of the world's best-preserved Roman cities at its feet. The volcano that buried Pompeii still dominates the skyline, and surrounding slopes are planted with vines that produce distinctive Lacryma Christi wines enjoyed across Campania.
Hortus Pompei on Piazza Esedra is where we meet you, a central garden bar a short walk from the archaeological entrances and the Circumvesuviana station. Ruins, mountain paths and vineyard terraces unfold from there without you piecing the day together yourself.
Steady walking for several hours at Pompeii and on the uphill Vesuvius path calls for moderate fitness. Guests from age four can join with adult supervision throughout, and closed walking shoes are essential for the volcano section.
Uneven ancient paving appears in places across Pompeii. Limited mobility or very young children in your group are worth mentioning when you book so we can advise on pacing and the crater path before the day.
Licensed guides connect the Pompeii ruins with the volcano that preserved them, then hand you a glass of local wine on the same slopes where those grapes grow. Commentary stays audible in a small group, and regular breaks suit mixed abilities rather than a rushed march through the park.
One itinerary covers the guided archaeological walk, the Vesuvius hike, transfers between sites and a vineyard lunch. Arrive in Pompei, follow your guide through the day, and leave having seen archaeology, mountain scenery and regional food and wine in a single coordinated outing.
The day runs about seven hours and combines a guided walk through Pompeii, a hike on Mount Vesuvius to the crater area, and a vineyard lunch with wine on the volcano slopes.
Pace is set for a mixed group with regular breaks. Moderate fitness helps for the Vesuvius ascent, but no technical climbing is involved.
Meet at Hortus Pompei on Piazza Esedra in central Pompei. Arrive around fifteen minutes before departure so the guide can welcome the group.
The Circumvesuviana train stops nearby. Hotel pickup may be available as a separate booking option from Naples.
Children from age four can join when accompanied by a responsible adult. Pompeii involves several hours on foot over uneven ancient paving.
Younger children may tire on the Vesuvius section. Ask before booking if you need advice on pushchairs or carriers.
Group size is limited to fifteen guests, keeping commentary audible and the pace manageable at Pompeii and on the volcano path.
Solo travellers can book a single place when availability allows. The day runs as a shared small-group departure.
Your licensed guide leads the Pompeii section, explaining temples, villas, shops and daily Roman life preserved under volcanic ash since AD 79.
Entry and routing follow the archaeological park rules. The guide focuses on highlights rather than every corner of the vast site.
After Pompeii you transfer to Vesuvius National Park for a guided hike towards the crater with views over the Bay of Naples.
The path is well marked but includes uphill sections on volcanic scree. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water for this part of the day.
A vineyard lunch with local wine is included on the volcano slopes, using produce grown in the fertile volcanic soil.
Dishes vary by season. Mention dietary requirements when booking so the winery can prepare alternatives where possible.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and layers for the volcano. Bring water for Pompeii and the ascent, plus a light jacket for the crater.
A small backpack is easier than a shoulder bag on the scree path. Sandals are not suitable for the Vesuvius section.
Outdoor sections depend on weather. Heavy rain or high wind on Vesuvius may lead to a revised route or rescheduled crater visit.
Contact details in your confirmation are the best way to check on the morning if you are unsure about the forecast.
Transport to the Hortus Pompei meeting point is not included for the standard departure. You make your own way to Piazza Esedra unless you book a pickup option.
Transfers between Pompeii, Vesuvius and the winery are included once the day begins. Taxis serve Pompei from Naples and Sorrento.
