Volcanic trails on Vesuvius slopes, calm well-trained horses and wide views over the Bay of Naples define this outing at around 500 metres above sea level. Choose the ride that suits your day: a focused two-hour trail ride, a half-day with wine tasting and lunch at a Vesuvian winery, or an evening ride followed by BBQ and local wines under the stars.
All three experiences start from the same meeting point in central Pompei before a short transfer to the riding base. You are fitted with a helmet, matched with a calm horse suited to your experience, and given a short briefing on mounting and basic signals before the group sets off on national park trails below the crater rim.
Ride only (about 2 hours): A focused horseback outing on Vesuvius slopes through vineyards and lava fields with photo stops and wide views over the bay. Ideal if you want the riding without a meal.
Wine tasting and lunch (about 4 hours): The same scenic ride, then time at a family winery on the volcano slopes for a guided tasting and traditional Italian lunch with local wines. Optional roundtrip pickup from Naples is available when you book that rate.
Wine tasting and dinner (about 4.5 hours, evening): A guided ride through the vineyards as daylight fades, followed by a relaxed BBQ at the winery with fresh local meats, vegetables and wines produced on the slopes of Vesuvius, with views towards the Gulf of Sorrento and Capri.
Your guide sets a comfortable pace on every route, with rest breaks and attention for nervous or first-time riders throughout.
Mount Vesuvius dominates the skyline from Pompei, Naples and Sorrento, rising above the Bay of Naples. Riding trails on its fertile lower slopes pass vines growing in volcanic soil, with the Pompeii plain spreading out towards the sea.
Via Plinio 46 in central Pompei is the meeting point, a short walk from the archaeological site and the Circumvesuviana railway. Winery visits on the longer options take place on the volcano slopes above the trails.
First-timers are welcome and no riding experience is required on any option. Minimum ages differ by experience: from 6 on the ride-only outing, from 11 on the lunch experience, and from 5 on the evening dinner experience when accompanied appropriately. Share rider weights at booking so horses can be matched safely.
Dress for the saddle with long trousers and closed shoes. For evening departures, bring a light layer for after sunset at the winery.
Horses and guides who work together every day know which mounts suit nervous beginners, which trails are calmest in a given season, and how to pace a small group so everyone enjoys the views without feeling hurried.
Whether you want a short introduction to riding with bay views or a fuller day pairing the saddle with Vesuvian wine and food, the same experienced team hosts you from briefing to farewell.
Three options share the same meeting point and riding base. The ride-only outing is about two hours on Vesuvius trails with bay views and no meal.
The wine tasting and lunch option adds about four hours in total with a winery visit, tasting and traditional lunch after the ride. The wine tasting and dinner option is an evening ride followed by BBQ and local wines at the winery.
Choose the option that matches how much time you have and whether you want food and wine included. Prices and departure times are shown when you select your date.
Every option includes a guided ride on trails within Vesuvius National Park at around 500 metres above sea level. Local law means horses do not go to the crater rim.
Your guide matches you with a calm horse and sets a pace for the group. First-time riders receive a short briefing before you mount.
After the scenic ride you visit a family winery on the volcano slopes for a guided tasting and traditional Italian lunch paired with local wines.
The ride, guide, horses, helmet and equipment are included. You can also select a rate with roundtrip pickup from Naples when available at booking.
The evening experience combines a guided ride through the vineyards with a BBQ at the winery featuring fresh local meats, vegetables and wines from the slopes of Vesuvius.
Expect views towards the Gulf of Sorrento and Capri as you dine after the ride. Helmets and riding equipment are provided on site.
Meet at Via Plinio 46 in Pompei, at the bar and tobacconist on the corner. Arrive around fifteen minutes early so the team can fit helmets and introduce your horse.
The Circumvesuviana train stops nearby. Parking in central Pompei can be busy, so allow extra time in summer.
The ride-only option welcomes children from age six when a responsible adult rides in the same group. The wine and lunch option requires riders from age eleven.
The evening dinner option accepts children from age five when accompanied appropriately. Ask before booking if you are unsure which option suits younger riders in your group.
Most departures run from two to eight riders. The evening dinner experience may run with up to six riders in the group.
Larger parties may need to book multiple slots or ask about a private arrangement through the booking system.
Helmets and riding equipment are provided on site. Wear long trousers and closed shoes with a small heel if possible. Avoid loose scarves that could catch.
Sun cream and a light layer help on the open slopes. For evening rides, bring an extra layer for after sunset at the winery.
No previous riding experience is needed on any option. Guides give a short briefing on mounting, posture and basic signals before you set off on calm, well-trained horses.
Nervous riders are common and guides are used to helping guests feel comfortable in the saddle.
Horseback rides need dry, calm conditions. Heavy rain, strong wind or storms may lead to cancellation with a full refund rather than unsafe riding.
Contact details in your confirmation are the best way to check on the morning if you are unsure about the forecast.
