Step onto the calm waters of Ripley Castle’s lake and experience paddleboarding in a safe and guided environment. Suitable for beginners and those looking to build confidence, this session combines skill development, fun challenges, and scenic views of the castle grounds.
The session begins on the lake bank with a warm-up and introduction to the equipment. You’ll be fitted with a buoyancy aid, leash, and paddle, and shown the basics of handling the board. Starting on your knees, you’ll learn to control the paddle and gain balance before moving to a standing position.
Once comfortable, you’ll navigate across the lake, enjoying the serene surroundings and the historic setting of Ripley Castle. Your instructor will offer guidance, introduce games and challenges, and help improve your paddleboarding technique. The pace is relaxed, allowing everyone to progress at their own comfort level while still having fun.
Throughout the session, you’ll experience both solo and group activities, testing balance, coordination, and confidence. The combination of skill-building, playful challenges, and scenic views ensures a well-rounded, memorable paddleboarding adventure. If you'd prefer to book a private session, please contact us.
Ripley Castle, Harrogate, provides a private lake set within historic grounds. The woodland and water create a peaceful and scenic backdrop for all paddleboarding activities, while still being easily accessible from Harrogate and surrounding towns.
On-site facilities include free parking and basic changing rooms, making it easy to prepare for your session. The estate’s open lake and calm waters are ideal for beginners and small groups seeking a safe, engaging outdoor activity.
No prior paddleboarding experience is required. Instructors will guide you through every step, from kneeling practice to standing and paddling across the lake.
Participants should be comfortable around water and bring a change of clothes, as getting wet is very likely during the session. Suitable footwear and clothing that allows freedom of movement are recommended.
Since opening in 2012, the centre has been dedicated to creating enjoyable and safe outdoor adventures for all ages. Every activity focuses on learning, fun, and developing confidence in a supportive environment.
Private and open sessions are run by experienced instructors who are passionate about helping participants gain new skills while enjoying the beautiful setting of Ripley Castle. The combination of safety, expertise, and a welcoming atmosphere ensures every session is memorable.
Yes, free parking is available at Ripley Castle for all visitors. When you arrive, it’s important to register your vehicle to ensure that parking is properly recorded. This can easily be done on the iPad located at reception, which helps the centre manage spaces efficiently and keeps everything organised for your visit.
The parking area is conveniently located close to the main facilities, making it straightforward to access your activity without a long walk. Even during busier periods, there is usually sufficient space for cars, so you shouldn’t need to worry about finding a spot. It is recommended to allow a few extra minutes when arriving to register your vehicle and make your way to the activity area.
Spectators are welcome at Ripley Castle and can enjoy watching the activities while relaxing with a coffee or finding a comfortable spot nearby. This makes it easy for friends and family to be part of the experience without needing to participate directly. It’s a great way to keep everyone included, whether you are taking on a challenging adventure or a more leisurely activity.
However, please note that some areas, such as the lake, are a considerable distance from Basecamp and are not accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs. It’s important for spectators to plan accordingly if they wish to follow along closely. While everyone is welcome, the terrain and activity locations may limit how much of the action can be observed from certain spots.
Basic changing facilities are provided for visitors who need privacy before or after their activity. These spaces are simple but functional, allowing you to change comfortably without disturbing other guests. They are designed to meet essential needs rather than offer extensive amenities.
For convenience, it is generally recommended to arrive dressed and ready for your activity. This reduces the need to rely on the changing areas and allows you to start your adventure promptly. Preparing in advance also helps minimise delays and ensures you can make the most of your time at the centre.
Dogs are welcome at Ripley Castle, as we encourage adventurers to share their experiences with their furry friends. Having your dog along can make your outdoor visit more enjoyable and adds an extra layer of companionship to your day. For safety and comfort, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, and owners should ensure their pets are well-behaved and friendly towards other visitors and animals.
Please be aware that some areas, including the lake, Disc Golf, Cryptic Chase, and Archery, do not allow dogs. These restrictions are in place to maintain safety for both your pet and other participants. Planning ahead will help you make the most of your visit while ensuring your dog remains safe, happy, and part of the experience wherever permitted.
Yes, getting wet is very likely. Paddleboarding involves balancing, kneeling, and standing on the board, so splashes and falls into the water are common, especially when learning new techniques or playing on-board games.
It’s important to bring a full change of clothes, spare shoes, and a towel. That way, you can enjoy the session fully without worrying about leaving wet or uncomfortable at the end of the activity.
A limited number of wetsuits and waterproof jackets are available to borrow, which can help in colder conditions or if you expect to get wet. All participants will receive a buoyancy aid, which is essential for safety on the water.
You’re also welcome to bring your own wetsuit if you prefer. Many people choose lightweight clothing that dries quickly for summer sessions.
Absolutely. The session is designed for beginners, with instructors offering step-by-step guidance. You’ll start kneeling on the board and progress to standing once you’re confident with balance and paddle technique.
The instructors also provide tips, games, and exercises to help you build confidence while having fun on the water. No prior experience is needed.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and dries quickly, such as leggings, shorts, or sportswear. Trainers or water shoes are ideal. Avoid loose clothing or jewellery that could get caught in equipment.
Dressing in layers can help for cooler days, and you may wish to bring a light waterproof jacket in case of rain. A change of clothes and shoes is essential.
Open sessions are for ages 14+, while private sessions can include children aged 10 and above. The activity is suitable for families, friends, or small groups looking for an active outdoor experience.
Instructors adapt the session for the age and ability of participants, making it fun and safe for everyone involved.
