ActivityPaddleboard Hire at Bewl Water

Getting out on the water doesn’t need to be complicated. With a two-hour paddleboard hire at Bewl Water, you can step straight onto the reservoir and enjoy time paddling across open water at your own pace. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed outing or something a little more active, it’s an easy way to spend time outdoors.
Your session begins at the watersports launch area beside the reservoir, where you’ll check in and receive a short safety briefing. The team will explain the basics of handling the paddleboard, where you are able to paddle, and the simple safety guidelines to follow while on the water. Even if it’s your first time, the boards are stable and straightforward to use, making it easy to get started.
Once you launch, you’ll have two full hours to explore the reservoir at your own pace. Some people prefer to stay close to the shoreline where the water is calmer and you might spot wildlife along the edges. Others enjoy paddling further out across the open sections of the lake, where the scale of the reservoir really becomes clear. With such a large stretch of water, there’s plenty of room to move without feeling crowded.
Many visitors treat the session as a relaxed paddle, taking breaks to sit or kneel on the board and enjoy the surroundings. If you find yourself wanting to paddle regularly, you can also pre-pay for a package of five hire sessions, giving you the flexibility to return and make the most of the water throughout the season.
This session takes place at Bewl Water, the largest reservoir in the South East. The wide open lake provides an excellent setting for paddleboarding, with a mix of sheltered shoreline areas and larger open water sections to explore. Its size means there’s plenty of space to paddle comfortably, whether you’re trying paddleboarding for the first time or already have some experience.
The reservoir itself is surrounded by countryside and offers plenty to do beyond the water. A 13-mile cycle path loops around the lake, and there are family facilities including playgrounds and a nearby aqua park. Many visitors combine their paddle session with a walk, cycle ride, or a relaxed afternoon around the reservoir.
No previous paddleboarding experience is required to hire a board. You’ll receive a safety briefing before heading onto the water, covering the key points you need to paddle safely and enjoy the session. As long as you’re comfortable around water and able to follow the guidance given, you’ll be able to make the most of your time on the reservoir.
You should be reasonably comfortable balancing on a board and paddling independently for the duration of the session. Children must be supervised by an adult, and buoyancy aids must be worn at all times while on the water.
Water sports are part of everyday life for the family team behind these sessions, and that experience shapes the way everything is run. The focus is on creating a welcoming space where people can enjoy the water, learn new skills, and feel comfortable returning again and again.
Operating at Bewl Water means paddlers have access to one of the South East’s best locations for time on the water. With open space to explore and knowledgeable staff on hand, every session is designed to be safe, enjoyable, and easy to join, whether it’s your first visit or one of many.
If you are travelling by car, the easiest route is from the A21 via the Lamberhurst Bypass. From the roundabout take the second exit onto the A21, then turn right onto Bewlbridge Lane. After around a mile, turn left and follow the signs for the Camping and Watersports car park.
If travelling by train, the nearest station is Wadhurst, approximately four miles away. Bus access is limited, with the closest stop around two miles from the reservoir, so many visitors choose to travel by car or arrange a short taxi journey from the station.
No previous paddleboarding experience is required. The boards provided are stable and suitable for beginners, and before you head onto the water you’ll receive a short safety briefing explaining how to use the equipment, how to paddle efficiently, and the key rules for staying safe on the reservoir.
If it’s your first time, most people start by paddling on their knees before standing once they feel comfortable. The calm edges of the reservoir are a great place to practise balance and get used to the board before venturing further out.
Comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting wet is best. In warmer weather, many people wear swimwear or lightweight sports clothing, while in cooler conditions you may prefer leggings, a rash vest, or other quick-dry layers that allow you to move freely.
Footwear is optional but water shoes or old trainers can be useful when launching from the shoreline. It’s also worth bringing a towel and a full change of clothes to leave by the shore or in your car for after your session.
Bewl Water is a large reservoir with plenty of open space for paddling, and designated launch areas are used for watersports activities. The session begins with a safety briefing so you understand where you are allowed to paddle and how to use the equipment correctly.
Buoyancy aids are provided and must be worn at all times while you’re on the water. The team are also nearby during hire sessions, offering support if needed and helping to ensure everyone enjoys their time on the water safely.
Paddleboarding is a low-impact activity that most people find surprisingly accessible. You can paddle standing up, kneeling, or sitting on the board depending on what feels most comfortable, and you can take breaks whenever you like during the two-hour hire period.
Some people enjoy a steady paddle exploring the reservoir, while others treat it as a relaxed outing with plenty of floating and resting along the way. You control the pace entirely, making it suitable for a wide range of fitness levels.
Children are welcome, but they must be supervised by a responsible adult during the session. Younger paddlers may prefer kneeling or sitting on the board rather than standing, which is perfectly fine and often more comfortable while learning.
In some cases, an adult and child may choose to paddle together on the same board depending on size and balance. The team will advise what works best during the safety briefing to help ensure everyone has an enjoyable session.
Falling in occasionally is part of learning paddleboarding, especially if it’s your first time standing on a board. The boards are designed so you can climb back on from the side quite easily, and the safety briefing explains how to do this safely.
Because buoyancy aids are worn throughout the session, you’ll stay afloat while getting back onto the board. Most people quickly get the hang of balancing and spend the rest of their session paddling comfortably.
Bewl Water is the largest reservoir in the South East, with a huge expanse of open water. The centre area is extremely deep, while the shoreline areas tend to be shallower and calmer, making them ideal for relaxed paddling and building confidence.
During the briefing you’ll be shown the designated paddling area for hire sessions. This ensures that everyone can enjoy the reservoir safely while sharing the water with other users and wildlife.
Yes, if you’re planning to paddle regularly you can pre-pay for a package of five hire sessions. This option gives you flexibility to return on different days and enjoy the reservoir whenever it suits your schedule.
Many people start with a single hire session and then choose the package once they realise how enjoyable paddleboarding can be. It’s a great way to build confidence and spend more time outdoors on the water.
The reservoir offers a wide range of facilities that make it easy to turn your paddleboard session into a full day out. There are cafés, walking areas, playgrounds, and open spaces where you can relax before or after your time on the water.
A 13-mile cycle route runs around the entire reservoir, and there are other attractions nearby including an aqua park during the warmer months. Many visitors bring bikes, plan a picnic, or explore the area after their paddle.
