You will practise planning, risk assessment, and delivering a range of sessions including survival skills, orienteering, map reading, and team challenges. The training focuses on adapting activities on the spot, developing your confidence to lead safely and effectively.
You will participate in practical exercises covering a variety of outdoor activities, including survival skills, orienteering, map reading, and team-building challenges. Instructors guide you through planning sessions, conducting risk assessments, and managing safety while teaching. You will have opportunities to practice delivering activities and receive feedback to improve both competence and confidence.
Sessions also emphasise adaptability, showing you how to respond when plans or activities do not go as expected. The 2-day option allows for more in-depth practice and additional scenarios, helping you become comfortable in managing groups, environmental conditions, and unexpected situations in real time.
Training takes place at flexible sites across Dartmoor, North Devon, or Sid Vale depending on availability and preference. Locations are selected to provide a mix of woodland and open terrain, allowing participants to practise varied outdoor activities in realistic conditions.
Instructors tailor exercises to the environment, using the natural features of each location to simulate different scenarios. Access to nearby facilities ensures you can review techniques, plan sessions, and discuss challenges in a supportive base before returning to practical exercises outdoors.
Practical clothing suitable for outdoor work, along with personal items such as bags, snacks, and drinks, is required. Any personal equipment used in normal sessions should be brought along for familiarisation and practical use.
The day is delivered by experienced outdoor instructors who focus on developing your confidence, practical skills, and ability to adapt activities to different groups and conditions. Hands-on guidance ensures you can lead safely while maintaining engagement and enjoyment for all participants.
Participants gain insight into both planning and real-time adaptation, with a strong focus on risk management, emergency response, and problem-solving. The supportive environment encourages questions, reflection, and practice, building confidence for leading diverse outdoor groups.
