Gain confidence and practical skills through the Outdoor Discovery Award (ODA) programme. Full-day sessions are suitable for participants aged 7 and above, offering progressive levels that introduce navigation, exploration, and basic outdoor techniques.
ODA Level 1 introduces simple map reading, identifying local landmarks, and basic route-following. Activities use street maps, pictorial park maps, and orienteering maps to develop familiarity with navigation and confidence outdoors.
ODA Level 2 builds on Level 1 with more challenging exercises, including following multiple waypoints, recognising terrain features, and applying problem-solving in navigation tasks. Safe route planning and decision-making are emphasised throughout.
ODA Level 3 develops independent navigation skills, including interpreting complex maps and planning longer routes. Participants practise autonomous navigation while receiving guidance, with certificates and badges awarded on successful completion.
Courses are available at Dartmoor Activity Centre or Sidvale Scout Centre. Instructors tailor exercises to the location and participants’ abilities, providing safe and engaging navigation challenges across varied outdoor terrain.
Sessions run across Dartmoor or at Sidvale Scout Centre, offering a mix of moorland, woodland, and footpaths suitable for practical navigation exercises.
Briefing areas at each centre allow participants to review maps, plan routes, and discuss safety before heading out. Instructors adapt routes to match group pace and skill level while ensuring safe participation.
No previous navigation or outdoor experience is required. Participants should wear suitable clothing and footwear and bring water and personal items.
Maps and compasses are provided. Food, drinks, walking boots, bags, and personal clothing are not included.
