Head out after dark on a small-group snowmobile ride through forest around Rovaniemi, with the trail lit by your machine and the night sitting quiet between the trees. You ride for about an hour, with a few stops to look at the sky and the snow, and your guide keeps the pace honest rather than racing a packed timetable. We collect you from stays within 17 km of the city centre, kit you out, and brief you at the base before you leave.
Pickup or a meet in town happens after dusk, then winter overalls, boots, gloves, helmet and balaclava go on before you transfer to the snowmobile base. Your guide runs through the controls, spacing and how the group rides in the dark, and drivers show a physical Category B licence. You sit on the machines, try the headlights, and pull away in a line once everyone is comfortable.
Forest trails run for about an hour with modest speeds, usually up to 40 km/h, and a few stops where you can step off, look at the snow and the sky, and take photos without blocking the trail. This is a night safari, not a dedicated aurora hunt, though if the Northern Lights appear while you are out we stay longer on the trail. Twin driving is standard, so two licensed adults can swap the handlebars during the hour.
After dark the forest outside Rovaniemi feels farther from town than it is. Street light drops away, the snow holds what little glow there is, and the trail runs through pine and open ground a short hop from the city. You are still close enough that the transfer does not eat the evening.
We collect you from hotels, apartments and holiday rentals within 17 km of the city centre, or you start from the office on Kansankatu. The exact line through the trees changes with snow, wind and how the group is riding, and machines stay at a modest speed so the night ride stays controlled.
Drivers must be 18 or over and bring a physical Category B car driving licence. A photo of the card is not enough. You do not need previous snowmobile time. The briefing at the base covers the controls and how we ride as a group in the dark before anyone sets off.
This evening is aimed at adults. Children over 140 cm can ride as a passenger behind a licensed adult when they can hold on safely. Wear warm base layers and thick socks under the kit we provide. Tell us in advance about any medical condition that could affect a safe ride. The outing is not recommended from the fourth month of pregnancy because of vibration. Alcohol and drugs are not allowed.
Winter guides on this team have years of snowmobile work on Lapland trails and keep shared night groups to eight or fewer so one guide can watch every rider on a dark line instead of managing a long convoy. Adult departures stay separate from family daytime safaris, which keeps the pace suited to who is actually on the machines.
Newest-generation snowmobiles and full winter kit are part of the evening, with twin driving included so two of you share a machine and swap the handlebars. Larger parties of eight or more travel with their own guide rather than joining a mixed night group. The evening is built around the ride itself, with extra time on the trail if the sky puts on a show.
We collect you from your stay within 17 km of Rovaniemi city centre, or you meet us at the office on Kansankatu. Winter kit goes on at the office, then we move to the snowmobile base while the city lights fall behind you.
Your guide covers the controls, spacing and how we ride as a group in the dark. Drivers show a physical Category B licence. There is time to sit on the machine and ask questions before the headlights point at the first trees.
You ride for about an hour through snowy forest, with a few stops to look at the landscape and the sky. The pace follows the group and the conditions. This is a night safari, not an aurora tour, though a clear sky can still put on a show.
If the Northern Lights appear, we stay out longer at no extra charge. Then we return to the base, hand back the kit, and take pickup guests back to their stay inside the 17 km area.
Nobody can promise the aurora. This is a night snowmobile safari, not a dedicated lights hunt, and the sky does what it does. If the lights appear while you are on the trail, we stay out longer so you are not packing up in the middle of it.
A clear-sky forecast gives you a better chance. If seeing the aurora is your main reason for going out, pick a night that looks clear and treat the ride itself as the evening, so it still holds if the sky stays dark.
The forest is dark, and you ride by the snowmobile lights with the guide setting the line. Beginners are welcome. The briefing happens before you leave the base, and the group stays small so the guide can keep an eye on every machine.
Speeds stay modest, usually up to 40 km/h, which keeps the night ride controlled. If you have never sat on a snowmobile, say so at the briefing and you will get time on the controls before the group moves off.
This evening is aimed at adults. Children over 140 cm can join as a passenger behind a licensed adult when they can hold on safely for the hour on the snow. There is no heated sleigh on this outing.
Younger children are better on a daytime family safari. If you are unsure about a taller child's stamina in the cold at night, contact us ahead of the day so we can help you choose the right session.
The same rule as daytime: anyone driving must be 18 or over and hold a physical Category B car licence. Bring the card. Digital copies are not accepted.
Passengers do not need a licence. Twin driving is the standard setup, so two licensed adults can swap the handlebars during the hour.
You ride for about an hour. Kit, briefing, pickup and drop-off sit around that, so plan on roughly 3 hours door to door. If the Northern Lights appear, we add time on the trail rather than cutting the riding short.
That extra time is included in the evening. We would rather you see the sky than watch it from a van on the way back to town.
Start at the office on Kansankatu in Rovaniemi, or we collect you from hotels, apartments and holiday rentals within 17 km of the city centre. Drop-off uses the same radius.
Give us your stay address ahead of the day. If you are farther out than 17 km, please make your own way to the office so the night ride does not shrink into a long transfer.
We provide thermal overalls, boots, gloves, a helmet and a balaclava. Night rides feel colder than the same trail in daylight, so wear proper thermal base layers and thick socks underneath.
A spare pair of gloves in a pocket helps at the stops when you take a helmet off to look at the sky. The kit we give you is the outer layer, not the whole insulation system.
Twin driving is included, with two people sharing a snowmobile. Solo driving is an extra, arranged at the office before you start.
On a dark trail we still keep the group together, so a solo machine does not mean riding off on your own. The guide stays at the front and sets the pace for everyone.
Eight is the usual shared-group size at night, because the guide needs a clear view of every rider. When eight or more of you travel together, we run a private evening with your own guide.
Share your headcount ahead of the day so we can match machines and pickup. We would rather give you your own guide than stretch a mixed night group past a safe size.
The driver is responsible for repair costs up to a stated maximum per machine. An optional self-liability waiver can be bought at the office before you start, and that lowers the maximum if you choose it.
Travel insurance that covers snowmobiling is a good idea as well. The briefing and the modest night speed are there to keep the ride controlled before anyone talks about waivers.
