Dawn breaks over Everest and Langtang as this trip settles into Nagarkot, one of the best sunrise viewpoints near Kathmandu, before a countryside hike towards Changu Narayan Temple. Farmland, forest paths and village life fill the walk between the two, with lunch included along the way. Culture, nature and a genuine change of pace from the city all come together in a single day.
An early pickup from a Kathmandu hotel gets guests to Nagarkot in good time for sunrise, when the Himalayan skyline, including Everest and Langtang on a clear morning, lights up over the valley. From the viewpoint the route turns into a gentle three to four hour countryside hike, passing farmland and small settlements on the way towards Changu Narayan.
Lunch is taken along the route before the hike finishes at Changu Narayan Temple, Nepal's oldest UNESCO World Heritage site, with a private vehicle then returning the group to Kathmandu.
Nagarkot sits on a ridge east of the Kathmandu Valley at altitude, long valued for its uninterrupted views across to the Himalayas on clear mornings and evenings. It is one of the most popular sunrise spots within reach of the city, without needing a multi-day trek to get there.
Changu Narayan lies on a hilltop at the opposite end of the walk, home to the oldest temple in Nepal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site rich in stone and metal craftsmanship. The countryside between the two is a patchwork of terraced fields, forest and small villages, giving the hike a strong sense of rural valley life throughout.
No hiking experience is required, since the walk between Nagarkot and Changu Narayan follows gentle countryside paths rather than steep or technical terrain. It suits complete beginners as well as more experienced walkers.
Warm layers are worth having for the early start at Nagarkot, since it can be cool before sunrise, along with comfortable shoes for the hours of walking that follow. The trip works well for families, since younger children are welcome from age two.
Guides on this route know exactly where to be at Nagarkot for the best sunrise angle, and how to pace the countryside hike so it stays relaxed rather than rushed on the way to Changu Narayan.
Combining a sunrise viewpoint with a hike and a genuine UNESCO site in a single day makes efficient use of time in Kathmandu, and the included lunch means there is nothing extra to plan once the trip is booked.
