



This course is designed to help you develop key navigation skills for running in the mountains, enabling you to safely explore off-track terrain. You’ll learn how to read and interpret maps, use a compass for orientation, and gain an understanding of essential emergency procedures. The focus will be on practical techniques that will allow you to move confidently through the wild, unmarked areas of the mountains.
This course focuses on developing the essential navigation skills needed to run in the mountains away from established paths. Participants will learn how to use a map to gather information from contour lines and features, as well as how to relate this to their current position. Compass skills will also be covered, helping to stay on track even when visibility is poor. You'll have the opportunity to practice these techniques in real mountain conditions, ensuring you gain the confidence needed to run across open ground.
In addition to navigation, the course also covers the importance of being prepared for emergencies. You’ll discuss essential equipment and procedures for dealing with injury or sudden changes in the weather. The day will involve a mix of running and walking as you explore these skills on varied terrain. The instructors will tailor the session to the group and the weather conditions, ensuring that everyone receives the support they need to succeed.
The course is based near Aviemore, giving you easy access to the beautiful Cairngorms mountain range. With a range of locations to choose from, the instructors will pick the best spots for the group on the day.
The meeting point is at Cairngorm Mountain Sports, just a 5-minute walk from Aviemore train station. From there, the group will head out to the mountains for a full day of training. After a day of exploration and learning, you’ll return to the starting point, with the session typically finishing around 4-5pm.
A good level of mountain walking fitness is recommended, along with some experience in off-road running. This course is ideal for those who want to enhance their ability to navigate in the mountains while maintaining a steady pace over mixed terrain.

This course is suitable for individuals with a good level of mountain walking fitness and some experience in off-road running. You’ll need to be able to comfortably walk uphill and run on uneven terrain for several hours.
While basic navigation skills such as map reading and using a compass are helpful, they are not essential. If you’re new to navigation, the course will provide you with a solid foundation in these skills, including map reading, interpreting contour lines, and using a compass to orient yourself in the mountains.
It’s essential to bring waterproof clothing (jacket and trousers), suitable footwear (fell trail shoes), a headlamp, food, water, and a small first aid kit. A full kit list is provided in advance, and includes items like a survival bag, whistle, and a spare insulated layer.
The course will be a mix of practical navigation exercises, running, and walking in the mountains. The group will start with basic map-reading and compass skills, followed by on-the-ground practice in real mountain conditions.
If the weather is severe, we’ll adjust the course to ensure your safety and comfort. The instructors are experienced in mountain conditions and will tailor the training to the best locations for that day.
This course is ideal for those who have some off-road running experience and want to develop their mountain navigation skills. It’s not designed for complete beginners, but if you’ve run on trails or uneven ground before and have basic walking fitness, you’ll benefit from the day.
Accommodation is not included in the course, but there are plenty of options in Aviemore, ranging from hostels to hotels. It’s recommended to book your accommodation in advance, especially during peak seasons.
