Experience flying on a flex-wing microlight with guidance from a highly experienced instructor. This introductory session provides the opportunity to handle the controls in a safe and controlled environment while enjoying open-air views. Flights are available in 30, 45, 60, or 90-minute sessions, suitable for beginners or as a unique gift experience.
Your experience begins with a detailed briefing covering safety, basic aerodynamics, and an introduction to the controls. You will be shown how the flex-wing responds to pilot input and how to maintain control during take-off, in-flight manoeuvres, and landing. This initial preparation ensures you are comfortable and confident before leaving the ground.
Once airborne, the instructor demonstrates the aircraft handling and allows you to take the controls under guidance. You will learn how weight-shift steering affects direction and speed, and how to manage smooth turns and climbs. The open-cockpit design offers uninterrupted views of the surrounding Hampshire countryside, including fields, villages, and the local airfield environment.
The flight concludes with a controlled landing, after which the instructor provides a debrief covering your performance, observations about handling, and guidance on pursuing further training. This hands-on approach ensures participants gain a clear understanding of the aircraft and confidence in their flying experience.
Popham Airfield is a long-established microlight flying site in southern England, featuring two well-maintained grass runways and ample hangar space. The airfield is located approximately 30 minutes from southwest London and is easily accessible from Winchester, Andover, and Basingstoke. It offers a welcoming environment for both beginners and those with some flying experience.
Visitors can enjoy the on-site café and viewing area, providing a comfortable space while waiting for flights. The surrounding open countryside and low-traffic airspace create excellent conditions for safe flying, while allowing participants to enjoy extensive aerial views and observe the operation of other microlights.
No prior flying experience is needed for this trial flight. Participants must be medically fit, able to safely enter and exit the aircraft, and meet a maximum weight limit of 16½ stone.
The minimum age for participants is 10 years old. Children under this age must be accompanied by an adult. The instructor will ensure all safety procedures are followed and provide guidance to accommodate individual participant needs, making the session accessible and comfortable.
The school specialises in flex-wing microlight training and trial flights, offering personal instruction in a professional and supportive environment. The Chief Flying Instructor has accumulated thousands of hours of experience and ensures all flights are conducted to the highest safety standards.
Students benefit from one-to-one tuition, allowing them to gain a detailed understanding of microlight flying and develop confidence in handling the aircraft. The combination of experience, personal guidance, and excellent local scenery makes this an informative and memorable introductory flight.
Trial flights are available in 30, 45, 60, or 90-minute durations. Each session includes a pre-flight briefing, the actual time in the air, and a post-flight debrief. The time spent airborne depends on weather conditions, air traffic, and the duration you choose.
Longer flights allow for more time controlling the aircraft under supervision and for exploring different manoeuvres. The instructor ensures the session is paced to maximise learning and enjoyment while maintaining safety.
Yes. During the flight, the instructor will allow you to handle the controls under close supervision. You will learn how weight-shift controls affect direction and airspeed and practice making gentle turns and climbs.
The instructor remains in control throughout to ensure safety. This structured approach allows you to experience handling a microlight while maintaining a high level of safety and confidence during your flight.
Flights are conducted using flex-wing microlights, either the PulsR or GT450. These open-cockpit aircraft are highly manoeuvrable, allowing for responsive control and wide, near-360-degree visibility.
Both aircraft are maintained to strict safety standards, offering a reliable and consistent experience. The choice of aircraft may depend on availability and session requirements, and the instructor will assign the most suitable aircraft for your flight.
If conditions such as high winds, low visibility, or heavy rain occur, flights may need to be postponed or rescheduled. The instructor will contact you to arrange a suitable alternative date.
Rescheduling is straightforward, and every effort is made to provide a flight as soon as conditions are safe. Refunds may also be arranged in accordance with the booking policy if rescheduling is not possible.
No licence is required for trial flights. This session is designed for beginners to experience microlight flying safely with one-to-one instruction.
The experience can serve as an introduction for those considering full microlight training and eventual NPPL(M) certification, providing insight into the skills and confidence required to progress further.
Yes. Participants must be at least 10 years old and not exceed 16½ stone in weight. Children under the minimum age must be accompanied by an adult.
These limits ensure the safety and comfort of all participants. The instructor will advise if any adjustments are necessary to meet individual needs, and all participants are briefed on safety and physical requirements before flying.
Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and closed shoes. Layers are recommended due to exposure in the open cockpit. Helmets and goggles are provided for safety and comfort.
Participants should avoid loose clothing or items that could interfere with controls. The instructor will provide guidance on additional equipment if needed to ensure a safe and comfortable flight.
