Start building the skills needed to achieve your National Private Pilot Licence (NPPL) with this 25-hour microlight instruction course. The course combines structured ground school with practical flight training, allowing you to gain experience handling a flex-wing microlight while learning essential navigation, take-off, landing, and emergency procedures.
The course begins with a pre-flight briefing covering safety, aircraft familiarisation, and an introduction to basic aerodynamics and flight principles. You will review controls, weight-shift steering, and techniques for take-off and landing, preparing for dual instruction in the cockpit.
Practical flying lessons progress from short circuits to longer cross-country exercises. Initially, the instructor guides all manoeuvres, gradually allowing you more control. Students typically reach their first solo flights after 10–15 hours of dual instruction, marking an important milestone in skill development.
Throughout the 25 hours, the course focuses on consolidating your flying skills, including navigation, altitude management, emergency procedures, and solo flight experience. The instructor provides personalised feedback after each lesson, allowing you to monitor progress and prepare for the General Skills Test and eventual NPPL(M) certification.
Popham Airfield is an established microlight training site in Hampshire, with two grass runways, hangars, and a café with viewing areas for visitors. Located about 30 minutes from southwest London, it is easily accessible from Winchester, Andover, and Basingstoke.
The airfield provides a safe, open environment for flight training, with low-traffic airspace and clear views of surrounding countryside. Students benefit from hands-on experience in a professional yet approachable learning setting, suitable for both beginners and those seeking to develop their NPPL(M) skills.
Participants must be at least 10 years old and not exceed 16½ stone in weight. A basic level of fitness is required to safely enter and exit the aircraft. No prior flying experience is necessary.
Students must follow all safety instructions during lessons. The instructor ensures participants are comfortable and provides one-to-one tuition tailored to individual learning pace and ability.
The school specialises in flex-wing microlight instruction, with instructors holding thousands of hours of flight experience. One-to-one tuition allows each student to receive personalised guidance on all aspects of flying, from circuits to solo cross-country navigation.
Students benefit from structured lesson plans, professional feedback, and a supportive learning environment. The combination of theory instruction, practical flight time, and experienced instructors ensures participants are well-prepared for NPPL(M) progression.
The course provides 25 hours of flight instruction. The duration depends on how frequently lessons are scheduled. Students attending two lessons per week will progress faster than those with longer gaps between sessions.
The pace is tailored to each participant’s learning ability. While 25 hours is the minimum for the General Skills Test, many students take additional hours to reach the required level of proficiency for NPPL(M) certification.
Yes. Once you have developed sufficient skills, the instructor will allow you to fly solo under controlled conditions. Typically, solo flights occur after 10–15 hours of dual instruction, depending on individual progress.
The instructor closely monitors all flights, ensuring safety while allowing hands-on experience to build confidence and competence in piloting a microlight.
No prior experience is required. The course is suitable for complete beginners and provides full instruction in both theory and practical flight skills.
Your learning starts with dual instruction and progresses at a pace suitable for your ability, ensuring safety while building competency in aircraft handling.
Training is conducted in flex-wing microlights, specifically the PulsR or GT450. These aircraft are open-cockpit, highly manoeuvrable, and offer excellent visibility, making them ideal for learning control and navigation.
All aircraft are maintained to strict safety standards. The instructor assigns the most appropriate aircraft based on session requirements and availability.
Yes. Participants must be at least 10 years old and not exceed 16½ stone in weight. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
These requirements ensure comfort and safety for all students. The instructor will advise if adjustments are needed to accommodate individual circumstances.
Ground school includes theory related to flight principles, aerodynamics, navigation, weather, airspace regulations, and pre-flight checks. It provides the knowledge necessary to support practical flying lessons.
Students receive instruction in planning cross-country flights, understanding air traffic considerations, and emergency procedures, preparing them for both solo flights and the NPPL(M) General Skills Test.
Flights may be postponed or rescheduled if conditions are unsafe, such as strong winds, low visibility, or rain. The instructor will contact you to arrange a suitable alternative date.
Safety is prioritised, and lessons only proceed when conditions allow. Flexibility ensures students can complete their 25 hours in a safe and effective manner.
Lessons combine pre-flight briefings, hands-on flight training, and post-flight debriefs. Initial sessions focus on circuits and handling, progressing to cross-country navigation and solo practice.
The instructor tailors each lesson to the student’s progress, ensuring skills are consolidated before advancing to more complex exercises. Feedback is provided to improve technique and confidence.
No. Accommodation is not provided, but there are hotels, B&Bs, and guest houses near Winchester and surrounding villages.
Students are responsible for arranging their own overnight stays if needed. The instructor can provide local recommendations.
By car, use postcode SO21 3BD and contact the instructor on arrival. Parking is available, and the café and viewing areas are open for visitors.
By train, Micheldever Station is a 15-minute walk or five-minute cycle from the airfield. The location is accessible from London, Winchester, Basingstoke, and Andover.
