⛵ Trip Details
Leaving Hell-Ville on Nosy Be, you sail south to Russian Bay, a peaceful inlet where local fishermen may offer fresh lobster – a delicious welcome to Madagascar’s coastline. Next is Nosy Iranja, known for its white sandy beaches and crystal-clear water, the perfect spot to relax and snorkel before the big downwind crossing begins. With strong east-west currents and broad reach winds, the boat can make quick progress across the 600 nautical miles, while fishing enthusiasts try their luck with billfish attracted by the currents.
After crossing the open ocean, the route skirts north of Mayotte and the Comoros islands before reaching the Tanzanian coast at Mtwara. Here, sheltered Mikindani Bay invites you to explore historical sites like Livingstone’s House and soak up the slow coastal life. The voyage then hugs Tanzania’s coastline, passing dramatic underwater drop-offs and hidden coves. You’ll visit islands such as Mafia, renowned for swimming alongside gentle whale sharks, before finally arriving in Zanzibar’s historic Stone Town, a fitting end to an epic ocean passage.
The sailing conditions throughout are warm and mostly downwind, benefiting from steady currents that can reach 2-3 knots, making for smooth and fast passages. Closer to the coast, you’ll experience more varied sailing while enjoying regular opportunities for beach hopping, snorkelling, and exploring charming coastal towns. The trip combines active sailing with plenty of chances to unwind and take in the diverse coastal landscapes and vibrant cultures along the way.
