This ensures that, should you end up in the water during the session, you can look after yourself until assistance arrives. Even with buoyancy aids and safety support available, a basic swimming ability is essential.

We strongly advise that anyone considering an activity on the water is honest about their swimming ability when booking. If you’re unsure of your capability, speak to us beforehand so we can advise you on the most suitable options.

No prior paddling experience is required, but it’s helpful if you’ve been on the water before. The equipment is straightforward to use, and staff will give you a clear safety briefing before you set off. That said, you should feel comfortable being around water and have a reasonable level of fitness to manage paddling for several hours. If you’re completely new, staying within the sheltered waters of Portland Harbour is the best option, as it provides a safe and calm environment to practise your skills.

If you’re more confident, you can explore a little further afield, though hires must stay within the Portland and Weymouth area unless otherwise agreed. This flexibility allows you to tailor the experience to your ability and comfort level, ensuring you get the most from your hire.

Each hire comes with your chosen craft (kayak, SUP, or canoe), a paddle, and a buoyancy aid. These essentials mean you’ll have everything required to get out on the water safely and comfortably. Dry bags may be available upon request, though it’s best to pack belongings in waterproof containers if you’re bringing them along.

Wetsuits and water wear are not provided, so you’ll need to bring your own suitable clothing. Footwear that can get wet is recommended, along with weather-appropriate layers, sun protection, and plenty of hydration. This ensures you’re fully prepared for a safe and enjoyable day.

Parking availability depends on the launch site you use. There are options for both paid and free parking, but spaces can be limited in peak times, so it’s worth arriving early.

As for changing facilities, not all sites have dedicated changing rooms. Many participants bring a towel or a changing robe to make life easier. There are usually cafés and public toilets nearby, but it’s best to come prepared for a more informal set-up.

The equipment is hired for use in Portland and immediate Weymouth area. The harbour offers a sheltered and scenic space to paddle, with calm waters and plenty to explore, making it perfect for both beginners and those with more experience.

If you’d like to paddle further afield, this can sometimes be arranged in advance, but it must be agreed before your hire starts. Safety is the priority, so conditions, experience levels, and tides will be considered before approving extended routes.

Children are welcome on certain activities, though the minimum age is usually 12 years old. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian throughout the session to ensure their safety and supervision. Group sizes for families or smaller bookings are normally between one and four people, making the experience more personal and manageable.

Pets unfortunately cannot take part in activities, as the sessions are not suitable or safe for them. If you’re traveling with a dog, it’s best to arrange alternative care during your time on the water.

Hire is available for a full day. Drop-off is from 09:30 onwards, with collection at 15:30. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy a leisurely paddle, stop for breaks, and explore the area at your own pace.
