Try one of the oldest winter traditions in Finnish Lapland on a private ice fishing outing at a frozen lake deep in the Arctic forest. Your guide teaches you to drill through the ice, fish with traditional equipment and warm up at a campfire BBQ far from the crowds.
The outing starts with collection from your accommodation, then a drive into quiet Arctic nature and a short walk through snow-covered forest to a remote frozen lake. There, you learn how to drill safely through the ice and fish with traditional Finnish hand lines, just as locals have done for generations.
While you wait for a bite, a campfire crackles nearby with hot drinks and Lappish snacks. If you land a fish large enough to keep, it can be cooked over the fire; smaller catches are released carefully. Whether or not the fish cooperate, the peaceful setting, crisp winter air and campfire meal make for a memorable Arctic afternoon.
The fishing lake lies in forested wilderness within reach of Rovaniemi, chosen for stable ice and a genuine sense of remoteness. Snow-covered trees frame the lake, and the silence of the Arctic winter is part of the experience.
Across Lapland, thousands of lakes freeze each winter, but accessing them safely requires local knowledge. A guided visit removes the guesswork and lets you focus on fishing and the campfire rather than navigation.
Complete beginners are welcome. Your guide provides all equipment and teaches the basics of drilling and handling the lines.
Thermal layers, a hat, gloves and waterproof winter boots are essential because you spend several hours outdoors on ice. Sitting still while fishing feels colder than walking, so over-dressing is better than under-dressing.
Ice fishing is one of the most authentic ways to connect with Arctic winter culture, and a private guide makes it accessible even if you have never held a fishing rod before.
Included pickup from Rovaniemi, a campfire BBQ and patient instruction turn a potentially daunting wilderness trip into a comfortable, well-organised day in the snow.
