Step away from the city and into the quiet forests of Lapland on a private berry-picking walk followed by campfire pancakes cooked over an open fire. Your guide helps you find seasonal wild berries and shares why Finnish forest produce is prized across the country.
Once collected from your accommodation, you'll reach a nearby forest where you walk at a relaxed pace searching for seasonal berries such as blueberries, lingonberries and crowberries. Along the trail, you learn about local ecology, traditional uses for wild plants and why Finnish berries are considered among the purest in the world.
Berry availability depends on weather and ripening cycles, so your guide always brings ready-made jam made from Finnish berries as a backup. When you have gathered enough or enjoyed the jam tasting, you head to a campfire spot where pancakes are prepared over the fire and topped with fresh berries or jam.
The experience takes place in forest areas within easy reach of Rovaniemi, where clean Arctic air and long summer daylight create ideal conditions for wild berries. The exact forest visited may vary depending on which areas are most productive on the day.
Lapland's boreal forests feel worlds away from the city despite their proximity to Rovaniemi. Mossy ground, birch and pine trees and the occasional glimpse of wildlife tracks make even a short walk feel like a genuine wilderness outing.
First-time foragers are welcome. The walk is gentle and suitable for most ages when accompanied by a responsible adult near the campfire.
Wear comfortable shoes and layers suited to the weather. Tell us about any dietary requirements when you book and we will plan the pancake toppings and drinks.
Berry picking connects you to a cornerstone of Finnish food culture in a way that a supermarket visit never could. Your guide turns a simple forest walk into a lesson in ecology, tradition and the quiet beauty of the Arctic summer.
The campfire pancakes add a warm, social finish to the outing, giving you time to taste what you have found and enjoy the forest atmosphere before returning to Rovaniemi.
