This full-day tour takes you deep into Vatnajökull’s glacial wilderness, combining an ice cave visit with a guided hike across the glacier. Small groups ensure a personalised experience, allowing you to explore safely and enjoy spectacular views. Each tour adapts to daily ice conditions, giving you a unique Icelandic glacier adventure.
The adventure begins at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where participants are fitted with all necessary glacier gear and receive a safety briefing. You then travel in a custom 4x4 to the glacier, traversing rugged terrain shaped by centuries of ice movement.
The first stop is a blue ice cave similar to our half-day tour, where you can explore safely and take photographs. From there, the hike continues onto Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, gradually ascending to reach higher viewpoints. Along the way, your guide shares insights on glacier formation, ice dynamics, and local natural history.
The hike includes some steeper sections, but the group moves at a manageable pace with breaks for photography and snacks. While the glacier is vast, you may encounter other groups in popular cave areas. Guides adjust routes daily to maximise safety and access to the best ice formations available that season.
Tours depart from Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, located along the main ring road in South East Iceland. The base is at the main parking area next to Diamond Beach, easily identifiable and accessible for participants. Guides are in clearly marked 4x4 vehicles.
The surrounding glacial landscape is dramatic, with floating icebergs and ever-changing ice formations. Beyond the cave, the glacier offers sweeping views and opportunities to appreciate the scale and quiet beauty of Iceland’s frozen wilderness.
A moderate level of fitness is required for hiking on uneven and occasionally steep glacier surfaces. Participants should be comfortable walking on ice and snow and be able to manage short ascents.
Warm, waterproof clothing is essential. Layering, gloves, hats, and insulated jackets are recommended. A small backpack with snacks and water is advised. Proper hiking boots are required; rental boots are available on location for 1,500 ISK.
