Watch the sunrise over Segovia from a hot air balloon and enjoy panoramic views of one of Spain’s most historic cities. Floating quietly above the rooftops and countryside below, you’ll see landmarks including the Roman Aqueduct, Alcázar Castle, and Gothic Cathedral from a completely different perspective.
Combining aviation, history, and relaxed adventure, this experience is designed to feel calm, memorable, and professionally organised from start to finish. With experienced commercial pilots, full safety certification, and a champagne breakfast included after landing, it is a fantastic option for couples, families, friends, and special occasions.
Your experience begins early in the morning at the balloon launch field near Segovia. After meeting the crew and pilots, you’ll watch the balloon inflation process while receiving a short safety briefing and overview of the flight. Seeing the burners fire up and the balloon rise into shape is one of the highlights of the morning and gives you a chance to take photographs before take-off.
Once in the air, the experience becomes incredibly peaceful. Because balloons travel with the wind, there is very little sensation of movement, creating a smooth and quiet flight. As the sun rises across the Castilian landscape, you’ll drift above Segovia’s historic skyline with clear aerial views of the Roman Aqueduct, the Alcázar, medieval streets, churches, and surrounding countryside. Morning conditions usually provide excellent visibility and calm flying weather.
After approximately one hour in the air, the pilot will land in a suitable open area outside the city. Ground crews will meet the balloon and transport passengers in 4x4 support vehicles while a traditional champagne breakfast is prepared. The experience concludes with flight certificates and souvenir photographs before returning to the original meeting point.
This balloon experience takes place in Segovia, a UNESCO World Heritage city located north-west of Madrid in the Castilla y León region of Spain. Known for its Roman engineering, medieval architecture, and elevated position above the surrounding plains, Segovia is considered one of the most visually impressive ballooning locations in the country.
Flights launch from a dedicated balloon field located along the N-110 road between Segovia and Ávila. Optional pickup from Madrid is available for guests staying in the capital, making this experience easily accessible as a day activity from the city.
No previous experience is required, and this activity is suitable for first-time balloon passengers. Guests should be comfortable standing for the duration of the flight and able to climb in and out of the basket with assistance if needed.
Participants will be asked for their approximate weight before the flight to assist with balloon loading and operational safety calculations. Comfortable outdoor clothing is recommended, along with closed shoes suitable for countryside terrain. Sandals and high heels are not suitable. Bringing a cap or head covering is also recommended due to heat from the balloon burners overhead.
This activity is not recommended for pregnant travellers or people with serious back or heart conditions. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
With more than 30 years of ballooning experience and thousands of passenger flights completed, operations are built around professionalism, safety, and creating memorable flight experiences. Flights are carried out by commercially licensed pilots authorised by the Spanish Aviation Safety Agency (AESA), with all balloons maintained under European EASA aviation standards.
The experience has been carefully designed to feel personal and well organised from arrival through to landing celebrations. Regular safety inspections, experienced support crews, passenger insurance, and quality operational procedures allow guests to fully enjoy the experience with confidence while exploring one of Spain’s most historic cities from the air.
Balloon flights take place shortly after sunrise, as early morning conditions generally provide the safest and smoothest flying conditions. Exact meeting times vary throughout the year depending on the season and sunrise times, so guests will receive confirmation closer to the activity date.
Arriving early is an important part of the experience, as you’ll be able to watch the balloon inflation process and meet the pilots and ground crew before take-off. Morning flights also offer the clearest lighting and visibility for photographs over Segovia.
The full activity lasts approximately four hours from arrival at the meeting point through to the end of breakfast and return transport. The actual balloon flight itself usually lasts around one hour, although this can vary slightly depending on weather conditions and landing options.
Guests should allow extra time afterwards if they are travelling onward or returning to Madrid. Ballooning is weather-dependent, so flight timings may occasionally change for operational reasons.
No previous experience or high fitness level is required. The activity is considered easy and is suitable for most people with normal mobility. Passengers simply need to stand during the flight and climb into the balloon basket with assistance from the crew if necessary.
Landings can sometimes involve a light bump depending on wind conditions, which is why the experience is not recommended for pregnant travellers or people with serious back problems or heart conditions.
Comfortable outdoor clothing is recommended, similar to what you would wear for a countryside walk. Closed shoes or trainers are strongly advised, as take-off and landing areas are usually open fields or farmland.
A cap or hat is also recommended because the burners above the basket can generate noticeable heat during flight. Sandals and high heels are not suitable for ballooning activities.
Yes, children aged 6 and above can take part when accompanied by an adult. Balloon flights are often popular with families because the experience is calm and smooth compared with many other aerial activities.
Children should be tall enough to comfortably see over the edge of the basket and able to remain standing throughout the flight. Younger children may find the early start time tiring, especially during warmer months.
Many guests who are nervous about heights are surprised by how calm ballooning feels. Because the balloon moves smoothly with the wind, there is very little sensation of speed or movement once airborne.
Unlike standing on a balcony or cliff edge, there are no sudden drops or fixed reference points directly beside you. Most passengers quickly relax and focus on the views and atmosphere during the flight.
Hot air ballooning is highly weather-dependent, and flights may be delayed or rescheduled if wind, rain, fog, or visibility conditions are unsuitable. Safety always comes first, and pilots make decisions based on aviation weather forecasts and local conditions.
If a flight cannot operate due to weather, guests are usually offered an alternative date depending on availability. Morning conditions are chosen specifically because they tend to provide the calmest and safest flying environment.
Transport from the landing area back to the original launch site is included using dedicated 4x4 support vehicles operated by the ground crew. This is a standard part of balloon operations, as the balloon lands in a different location depending on wind direction.
Optional pickup and drop-off from Madrid is also available for an additional €40 per person, making the activity accessible for visitors staying in the city without their own transport.
Balloon baskets usually carry between 6 and 16 passengers depending on operational requirements and balloon size. Individual places can be booked, and groups are organised by the flight team before departure.
The basket is divided into sections to give passengers space and stability during the flight. Even with larger groups, everyone is normally able to enjoy clear views throughout the experience.
Yes. Flights are operated under commercial aviation approvals issued by the Spanish Aviation Safety Agency (AESA), and all balloons are maintained according to European EASA regulations and inspection requirements.
Passenger insurance is included as part of the activity. Pilots are commercially qualified and highly experienced in passenger balloon operations, with regular technical inspections carried out on both balloons and equipment.
