Over three days you leave the city behind for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, trekking to a mountain gorilla family and walking with Batwa guides who share forest heritage. Private 4x4 transport, lodge nights and permit handling are organised in one private package.
Day one is a scenic road journey from Entebbe or Kampala into the misty Kigezi highlands, with lunch en route and your first night at a lodge on the forest edge. You'll meet your driver-guide, settle in, and hear what trek morning feels like when the forest is still cool and bird calls carry through the trees.
Day two is gorilla day: a park briefing, then a guided hike of roughly two to six hours on steep, muddy trails until rangers locate your assigned family. You'll spend up to an hour watching juveniles play and silverbacks feed, then walk with Batwa community guides who share how people lived alongside this forest before the park boundary changed.
Day three eases you back toward Entebbe or Kampala after breakfast, with highland photo stops and a lunch break timed around your flight or hotel drop-off. The same private 4x4 stays with you throughout; rangers set the pace on trek day, and optional porters can carry your daypack if you want hands free on the mud.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park protects montane forest on the edge of the Albertine Rift, home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. The Rushaga sector in the south offers steep, vegetation-rich trails where silverbacks and family groups feed and nest at varying altitudes.
Reaching Bwindi means crossing the sculpted hills of south-west Uganda, often called the country's highland region, where tea plantations, terraced fields and volcanic skylines appear through the mist. It is a long but rewarding drive from Entebbe or Kampala, and we break the journey with meals and photo stops where it is safe to do so.
No previous trekking experience is required, but you should be comfortable walking uphill on uneven, muddy paths for several hours with your own day pack. Gorilla trekking regulations require participants to be at least sixteen years old and in reasonable health for sustained forest walking.
If you have knee, heart or mobility concerns, tell us when you enquire so we can advise on porter support, pacing and whether this itinerary suits you. Permits and lodge space are secured once you confirm dates and traveller details.
You'll travel with a Ugandan team based in Kampala who know permit seasons, road conditions and lodge standards across the south-west. We secure gorilla permits in advance, coordinate Batwa community visits respectfully, and keep pick-ups flexible from airport, city hotel or guesthouse.
Private vehicles and small groups mean your questions are answered in real time, from packing lists to tipping guidance, and your itinerary can be adjusted around flight times where regulations allow. Community and conservation matter on every departure: fair pay for guides and porters, and visits that fund local livelihoods alongside park fees.
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Entebbe or Kampala through the rolling Kigezi hills towards Bwindi. Lunch is taken en route as the air cools and forested ridges come into view.
You check in at Rushaga Gorilla Lodge for dinner and a briefing on tomorrow's gorilla trek, including what to wear, how porters can help, and how the ranger team keeps everyone safe in the forest.
After breakfast you join Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers for a guided trek through Bwindi to spend up to one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family. Trails can be steep, muddy and humid between roughly 1,160m and 2,607m, with walking times often between two and six hours depending on where the group is feeding.
In the afternoon you meet Batwa community guides for a heritage walk that shares how forest people lived, foraged and protected the ecosystem for generations. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included back at the lodge.
Enjoy a final breakfast with views towards the Virunga volcanoes before starting the return drive towards Entebbe or Kampala, with lunch en route.
Your driver drops you at the airport or hotel you agreed at booking, leaving time for your onward flight or evening plans.
We collect you from Entebbe International Airport, your Kampala hotel or another agreed pick-up point at the start of day one. Your driver-guide confirms the exact time once your permits and lodge are secured.
You'll stay at Rushaga Gorilla Lodge on the southern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a mid-range lodge chosen for comfort after long trekking days. Rooms combine natural materials with modern touches, and the main area has a log fireplace where guests gather in the evening to warm up and share stories from the forest.
Evenings are relaxed rather than formal: hot showers, outdoor decks overlooking the forest fringe, restaurant meals included on the plan, and Wi-Fi in the main lobby so you can send a quick message home before an early start. After the gorilla trek and Batwa experience, the lodge is your base to rest, dry your kit and prepare for the drive back towards Entebbe or Kampala.
Gorilla trekking is rated moderate to demanding on steep, muddy forest paths between about 1,160m and 2,607m elevation. You should be comfortable walking for several hours with a small day pack while rangers locate the gorilla family.
Local porters can be hired for a modest fee to carry bags and offer a steadying hand on slippery sections, which many guests find invaluable on the return climb.
Yes, a certified gorilla trekking permit for Bwindi is included in the package price quoted for this itinerary. We apply for permits against your confirmed travel dates once you book.
Permit numbers are strictly limited each day, so securing your place early is important, especially in peak months when lodges and vehicles also fill quickly.
Uganda Wildlife Authority rules require trekkers to be at least 16 years old for gorilla trekking, and rangers check identification at the briefing. Younger children cannot join the forest walk even with a parent.
We confirm ages for every participant when permits are applied for so there are no surprises at the park gate on trek morning.
We can pick you up from Entebbe International Airport, hotels in Kampala, or another agreed location in the region at the start of day one. Your driver will contact you the evening before with an exact collection time.
If you are already in Uganda, tell us your hotel name and we will coordinate a smooth handover from your previous accommodation.
Day one includes lunch and dinner, day two includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, and day three includes breakfast and lunch at the lodge or en route as described on your final schedule.
Drinks outside the meal plan, extra snacks you buy yourself, and alcohol at the lodge bar are not included unless your quote states otherwise.
Private departures can be arranged for solo travellers, couples, families and small groups up to eight guests on this style of package. You do not need to join a shared group with strangers unless you specifically request that format.
Share your preferred dates and we will confirm vehicle space, lodge rooms and permit availability before you pay a deposit.
Wear long trousers and long sleeves to protect against nettles and vegetation, with waterproof hiking boots that have already been broken in. Neutral colours are fine and a hat helps in sunny clearings.
Gardening gloves help when holding vines, and a light rain jacket is useful year round because showers can arrive quickly in montane forest.
Comprehensive travel and medical insurance is required for this trip and is not included in the package price. Your policy should cover trekking activities, medical treatment in Uganda, and emergency evacuation if needed.
Bring a copy of your policy details and emergency contact numbers in your day pack in case lodge or park staff need them.
The Batwa are indigenous forest people who share stories, skills and cultural practices on a guided walk separate from the gorilla trek. It is led by community members and focuses on respectful cultural exchange rather than performance alone.
The walk adds human history to your time in Bwindi and supports community-led tourism that complements national park conservation goals.
Bwindi treks run year round, though drier months from June to August and December to February often make forest paths easier underfoot. Mornings can still be cool and misty at altitude.
Rain is possible at any time, so waterproof layers and dry bags for electronics are always recommended regardless of when you travel.
