Spend a full half day riding deep into Iceland’s highland terrain on a flexible snowmobiling experience that prioritises conditions, space and time on the machine. This tour is designed for anyone who wants more distance and variety than standard glacier rides, while keeping the pace accessible for a wide range of abilities.
The experience starts at the main base on Road 249, where you’ll meet your guide for a detailed safety briefing and overview of how the day will run. You’ll be fitted with insulated outerwear, helmet and protective gear before heading out. This is not a fixed route or rigid convoy-style ride; the focus is on adapting the day to weather, snow conditions and group ability.
Once on the snowmobiles, the riding time is generous and varied. The guide selects routes that offer open snowfields, changing terrain and space to ride comfortably, while keeping the experience rated Easy. Beginners are given time to settle into the controls, while more confident riders benefit from longer stretches of uninterrupted riding.
Throughout the day, there are pauses to regroup, take photos and rest. A light lunch is included during the tour, allowing you to recharge before continuing. The overall flow is relaxed and responsive rather than tightly scheduled, making the most of the conditions on the day.
This experience takes place in Iceland’s highland environment, accessed from the south coast and extending into quieter, less-travelled snowmobiling areas. The terrain here offers wide open spaces and changing snow conditions, ideal for longer rides away from busier glacier zones.
The meeting point is Brú Base on Road 249, located around 3 km past Seljalandsfoss near Hvolsvöllur. The base is easily accessible by car. Pick-up and drop-off services are available from selected locations for an additional fee when arranged in advance.
No previous snowmobiling experience is required, but participants should be comfortable spending several hours outdoors in cold conditions and following guide instructions. The route and pace are adjusted to suit the group.
Drivers must be at least 18 years old and hold a full, valid driving licence. Learner permits, tractor licences and motorcycle licences are not accepted. This experience is not recommended for guests with serious back problems, heart conditions, or during pregnancy.
Longer snowmobiling days require more than just time on the machine. Experience in route choice, weather assessment and group management makes the difference between a rigid ride and a well-paced day on the snow.
Guides are locals with extensive highland and glacier experience, many with Search and Rescue backgrounds. That expertise allows routes to be adapted in real time, delivering a safer, more rewarding day without unnecessary pressure or rushing.
