Based in the heart of the Norfolk Broads, Salhouse Broad lies on the River Bure between Wroxham and Horning. Its varied landscape includes woodland, reedbeds, and open water, creating a haven for wildlife and a peaceful retreat for visitors.
Salhouse Broad is unique in its origins, having been excavated for gravel rather than peat. Today, it is a cherished site with diverse habitats such as mature dry woodland, wet woodland, and open fen. Managed sustainably by the ranger team and landowner, the Broad’s income supports its conservation and accessibility for all.
Participants must be confident swimmers and physically able to manage a kayak. No prior kayaking experience is necessary, making this hire suitable for beginners as well as more experienced paddlers.
Under 18's must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Salhouse Broad is a place of exceptional beauty, rich in history and wildlife. Its laid-back atmosphere and conservation-focused management make it a perfect destination to unwind and connect with nature.
As part of the Broads Executive Area and a Conservation Area, the Broad is meticulously maintained for visitors while preserving its heritage. Income generated from activities like this goes directly into sustaining and enhancing the site, ensuring a balance between accessibility and environmental stewardship. When you hire a kayak here, you’re not only enjoying the water but also supporting the ongoing care of this special location.
Public toilets are available at the car park on Lower Street.
Please note that these facilities are approximately a 10-minute walk from Salhouse Broad itself, so plan accordingly before heading to the hire location or venturing on your activity.
Yes, Salhouse Broad is a dog-friendly location. We ask all visitors to clean up after their dogs using the designated dog waste bins available on-site.
If your dog has poor recall or is prone to chasing wildlife such as wildfowl, it should remain on a lead at all times.
Swimming is strictly prohibited at Salhouse Broad due to safety concerns. The water is used frequently by boats, and there are submerged hazards that could pose risks to swimmers.
If you have any questions or concerns about water safety, Rangers on-site are available to provide guidance.
Dogs are allowed in Canadian canoes, but it’s worth noting that this increases the chance of capsizing, so it is done at your own risk and not recommended.
Unfortunately, dogs cannot accompany you in sit-on-top kayaks, as these lack the space required for additional passengers.
Our sit-on-top kayaks are designed for one person only, ensuring a safe and comfortable paddling experience for individuals.
Yes, from April to October, you can enjoy a selection of refreshments at The Hungry Otter, which is conveniently located on-site.
Offerings include teas, barista coffees, cakes, ice cream, and more, making it a great place to relax after your activities.
Yes, Salhouse Broad features a children’s play area designed by CAPco.
It includes a climbing net, high walkway, climbing wall, slide, and monkey bars, offering plenty of activities to keep younger visitors entertained.
While Salhouse Broad welcomes visitors of all abilities, wheelchair access is currently limited. The boardwalks are wide enough for wheelchairs, but some paths are uneven, and shingle along the moorings can make navigation difficult.
We are actively seeking funding to improve accessibility so everyone can fully enjoy the Broad.

Fabulous! Whole experience was spot on, would definitely do again, thank you ❤️ x
Roger was very helpful and put everyone at ease. He got the right balance between the importance of health and safety and the fun of the river. We were originally hiring a day boat but this was much more fun and we would definitely do it again, and recommend it…
Really friendly and helpful and in such a pretty spot! We will definitely be returning- thank you!
