Muddy trails on the east side of El Yunque lead to two river pools, with a local guide talking through plants, wildlife, and forest history as you go. You hike, swim, and can try a rope swing or a natural rock slide rather than a lookout circuit. You meet in Fajardo and follow in your own vehicle; taxis and ride-hail cars are not allowed on this route.
Once the briefing in Fajardo is done, the convoy heads into the east side of the forest. A walk of about 20 to 30 minutes brings you to the first watering hole, with time to swim, use a rope swing, or jump from the rocks if you want to.
A further 15-minute hike leads to a second pool with a natural rock slide and an optional high jump into the river. Jumps and the slide are optional. Plan for mud and wet rock throughout, and you should be confident in moving water.
Fajardo sits on the east coast of Puerto Rico, a short drive from El Yunque. The group meets at Yagrumo Restrobar on Highway 985, then follows the guide inland to the east side of the rainforest, a mountainous stretch of tall trees, bamboo, guava, and river gorges rather than a paved park loop.
The hike is on a natural forest path down to two watering holes. There is no boardwalk. Expect mud, wet rock, and uneven footing, with time in the river at both pools. This side of the forest is used because the river has cut swimming holes and a natural slide into the rock, which is the point of the morning rather than a viewpoint stop.
A solid level of general fitness is required. The hike is short in distance but the ground is muddy and slippery, and you will be on your feet for much of the morning. You should be able to swim. Flip-flops, slides, and open-toe shoes are not allowed.
Children aged 5 and over may join. You must have your own or a hired vehicle; you cannot follow the convoy by taxi or ride-hail. The group leaves Fajardo on time, and missing the convoy is treated as a no-show.
Local guides set the pace on trail and in the river, and talk through plants, wildlife, and history as you walk rather than rushing between photo stops.
The morning uses two watering holes on the east side of El Yunque, with time to swim and to try the rock slide if you want to, instead of a long coach circuit of lookouts.
Check in at Yagrumo Restrobar on Highway 985. After a short briefing on footwear, swimming, and the convoy, you follow the guide in your own vehicle from Fajardo to the east side of El Yunque.
Arrive at least 10 minutes before the 8:30am start. Taxis and ride-hail cars cannot join this transfer.
A walk of about 20 to 30 minutes on a muddy forest path leads to the first watering hole. There is time to swim, try a rope swing, or jump from lower rocks if you want to.
Your guide talks through plants and wildlife along the way, including bamboo, guava, and the older trees of this part of the forest.
A further 15-minute hike brings you to a second pool with a natural rock slide and an optional high cliff jump of about 12 metres into the river.
None of the jumps are compulsory. When river time is done, you walk back to the vehicles and drive yourselves back to Fajardo.
Meet at Yagrumo Restrobar on Highway 985, Fajardo 00738. Search that name in Google Maps so you reach the correct car park.
Arrive at least 10 minutes before the 8:30am start. The convoy leaves on time. Late arrivals are treated as a no-show, with no refund or same-day rebook if you miss the group. You must drive your own or a hired vehicle and follow the guide from Fajardo to the trail. Taxis and ride-hail cars are not allowed.
You do not need to be a hillwalker, but you do need to be comfortable walking on muddy, uneven ground and spending time in a river. The walks between pools are about 20 to 30 minutes and then about 15 minutes, and the footing is slippery rather than steep for hours on end.
This is not a gentle stroll. Choose another day in Puerto Rico if you are unsure about your footing in mud and water.
No formal hiking background is required. A local guide leads the group, sets the pace, and points out plants, wildlife, and river hazards as you go.
What matters more than experience is suitable footwear and a willingness to get muddy. The path is a forest trail, not a boardwalk, so closed-toe shoes with grip are essential.
The minimum age is 5. Younger children cannot join. There is no separate child rate on this booking; live prices are shown at checkout.
Children must be confident around water and able to walk the muddy trail with the group. Adults remain responsible for them at the pools and on the rocks.
No. This listing does not include a lift into the forest. You meet in Fajardo and then drive your own or a hired vehicle, following the guide to the trailhead.
Taxis and ride-hail cars are not allowed on this route. If you need a vehicle included, book the sister outing that starts in San Juan with transport from the meeting point.
Wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet and muddy, plus swimwear under or in your bag. Flip-flops, slides, and Crocs are not allowed because they become dangerous on wet rock.
Bring a change of clothes, drinking water, a small snack, sun cream, and a bag for wet kit. A dry pouch for your phone is useful at the pools.
Yes. Time in the river is a core part of the morning, even if you skip the higher jumps. You should be confident in moving water and happy to get fully wet.
Life jackets may be available for some river time, but they do not replace being able to swim. If you are not a swimmer, this outing is not a good fit.
The booking is about 4 hours, including the drive from Fajardo, the two trail sections, and time at both river pools.
The convoy leaves at the stated start time, usually 8:30am. Arrive at least 10 minutes early. Late arrivals cannot join once the group has left.
This is a rainforest. Light rain is common and the day often still runs, because the pools and the trail are already wet. The ground will be muddier after a shower.
If conditions on the river or trail are unsafe, the guide may change the plan or stop the outing. Weather can affect whether the day goes ahead, so pack a light layer you do not mind getting soaked.
No. The rope swing, rock jumps, and natural slide are optional. You can swim in the pools and stay on lower rocks if you prefer.
The higher cliff jump at the second pool is around 12 metres. Only try jumps you are comfortable with, and listen to the guide on where it is safe to enter the water.
You meet in Fajardo at Yagrumo Restrobar on Highway 985. Use Google Maps for that name so you do not go to the wrong lay-by.
The group leaves on time. If you miss the start there is no refund or same-day rebook on this product, so build in extra time for east-coast traffic.
